  1. I have been seriously thinking of selling the Mustang. I just never use it. It's such a beautiful car, and I love to just sit and stare at it, but it's so impractical (no AC, no PS, low gas mileage, etc.) Most times it just sits in the garage collecting dust. The summer is here and I always think I'll use it more, but then I take it for a ride and I'm sweating / stuck to the vinyl seats, stink like gas, and am constantly manhandling the steering wheel for around town driving; so it ends up back in the garage fairly quickly.

     

    Recently I've been consumed with the Z project and the Mustang has been a constant thorn in my side regarding storage (I only have a 1 car garage), so I'm constantly looking for a place to put it when the Z is being worked on. I'd hate to leave it outside...

     

    The final straw has been the fact that my Fiancee and I recently split... we met in that car (and she adored it), honestly, I think she was the main reason why I held on to it for so long. Now I'm like, just get it out of my sight.

     

    Realistically, what could I get for the car? It's a 69 Coupe - Roller 302, GT40 Aluminum heads, cam, Edelbrock intake / carb, 5 speed conversion (Z rated World Class T5), 3:55 rear, all new suspension (with Opentracker Maier, and Global West parts)... - PSE 17" Wheels - I've got well over $20K in it, and it runs and drives flawlessly, It's basically a new car with everything rebuilt / upgraded (besides the things I mentioned that just come with it being an "old" car). It's no show car paint job, but it's definitely a very clean driver (aesthetically).

     

    I don't want to lose my shirt, but I don't know if I can hang on to it anymore :-(

  3. Great to see you're making progress! Can't wait to see those gauges lit up!

     

    I'm sure I missed it back in the thread, but what seats are you running? Did you have to modify the factory floor mount to make them work?

     

    I had this killer set of lumbar adjustable seats out of the white 300zx, they look a lot like your seats. They were a basketball/cream color and would have looked so good with my green Stang, but when I sat them in the car, they sat way too high because the factory floor mounts for the OEM seats are really high off the floor. Thought about modifying the floor to make them work, but didn't want to get into cutting the floor up to mount the seats.

     

    I'd really like to get a comfortable set of seats in there at some point, so I'm curious what you're running (and how expensive)!

    I haven't forgotten about you or changed my mind. I had family coming up for Thanksgiving and I'm still in the middle of remodeling my kitchen. I've been working like crazy on the house to be ready for guests. Now of course I have to get ready for Christams so I'm going to have to put this trip off until early spring (or until a nice enough weather day after the holidays).

  5. Love the story, I'm glad it is working ut that you can continue the project with a Z but not have to go through all of those setbacks! Car looks very nice :thumbup1:

     

    Thank you! Much appreciated. The last year's been a real roller coaster, but I think I'm finally getting to the point where I see the light at the end if the tunnel. Looking forward to completing the car and hitting the track come spring!

    That's an awesome TIG machine, congrats! I took a class for both MIG and TIG last year, but only had enough cash to buy a MIG. I really enjoyed TIG a lot more, and can't wait till the day I can buy one and start playing.

     

    Your welds really look pretty darn good for just starting out! Good luck with it.


  7. ok -- so the goal is to use multiple arduino micro-controllers(prototype) with RGB addressable LED pixel strings to control the gauge cluster lighting, interior lighting, turn signals, tail lights etc.. moving to atmega 328P circuit build once design is completed..

     

    first tests are looking good, since the YearOne bezel did not come with turn signal or bright light indicators, i will program the far right and left to blink green when the appropriate turn signal is enabled, and also have the speedo gauge light blue when the bright lights are on.. the Shelby sequential tail lights should be fun with the arduino.. its all in testing at the moment, obviously the brightness will be the biggest challenge, adding enough RGB LED's to arrive at the brightness needed.. fun stuff..

    Very cool! I'm loving that! I've always wanted to replace the factory gauges but hate losing the turn signals (and the aftermarket single LED turn signal always looks cheesy in my opinion). That is a great and creative option!

     

    On the youtube video you said you needed to make custom lights in the bezel, why do you need to do that if you already have them working in the factory light positions?


  8. I lost my power Monday night at the height of the storm and we didn't get it back till about 4 hours ago! Trees down everywhere but my house escaped without damage. Luckily my fiancee's parents are in the next town over (and they never lost power), so we slept/showered there.

     

    So glad to be back home with power! But overall very lucky. Most of NJ & NY got hammered. My work building in downtown Manhattan still doesn't have power, subways are all flooded, it's a real mess.


  9. I had much of the Cobra brake parts already on hand, so I went with just the conversion adapter kit # ST-CBKREAR. If you don't have those parts already, the kit you identified should be just the ticket.

     

    As for the spacer shim, I have found them only required when using the Green Bearing sealed o-ring style wheel bearings used by Moser with their axle kits. These bearings are a little bit wider than the stock bearings and the shim is required to make up that difference and allow the brackets to seat properly on the flanges with the wider bearings.

     

    Hope this helps!

     

    I had the worst time with the green bearings. The guy who set up my 8" rear swore by them so I installed them. I could not stop them from leaking! After 3 new O-rings and having it apart 4 or 5 times, I tossed them and went back to conventional bearings with axle seals. Hope you don't end up with the same problem!


  10. So you have to put life in perspective .. that's a lot of stitches .... is this your dream car?

     

    I've always loved the 300zx. My dad had an 84 Turbo when I was growing up, and a neighbor down the street a 260z. When I bought my first Z32 TT over 13 years ago, I knew I was in love. I've just never felt more comfortable behind the wheel of any other car. When I sold my second TT in 03 to buy a house, I always knew I'd have another one someday.

     

    I love my Mustang, and always wanted to build/own a 69. But I've found with owning a Classic, there's just so little time you can actually use it because of practicality purposes.

     

    I was so excited when this Z fell into my lap, and the possibilities seemed endless. 23-26 mpg AC, power everything, and twin turbo's easily capable of making a reliable street/daily driven 500hp. I love the fact you can cruise in style/comfort, and have a monster under your foot when you mash the gas and the turbos spool... But it's just been one long nightmare! I'm at the point where I've spent so much money on this build that I could have bought an immaculate low mileage 300zx TT!

     

    I've always adhered to the built not bought rule, but damn... I'm finally understanding why guys just go and buy a Porsche and hit the track. You get a car that you can actually drive! (and sell for most of your investment back a few years later). Instead of a car in pieces in your garage, constantly wrenching on it.

     

    I guess I'm getting older, but I just don't enjoy the process of a build like I used to. Less free time/more responsibilities just leaves me feeling stressed about the build constantly. It's like an all consuming monkey on my back. I guess I'm just impatient.

     

    I'd lose my shirt if I try to sell all the parts I just bought, so I guess I really have no choice but to find another shell and build the whole thing. But It's been tough finding something really clean - these cars are getting old and so many of them are really beat to shit (at least the ones in my price range anyways). Chalk it up to adult sensibilities, but it just kills me knowing I'll never get this money back.

     

    So to answer your question- my current 300zx is definitely no dream car, but the 300zx in general (and the one I owned previously definitely was), it's probably the best car I've personally ever owned. So yea, if I can pull it off, I think I'd be pretty happy.
