Anyone with a Cleveland using electric fans

I am using the block as my source for the mechanical water temp gauge. There are no other spots besides the water pump. I’ve been told not to use that area, so I bought a thermostat neck that had the provision for another temp sensor. I don’t know if that is the right alternative. Those who had experience with a Cleveland what have you done
