Steering Column Plus Rack n pinion set up

Recommended Posts

HI. I was curious on my 70 build if anyone has had trouble buying or finding columns for 1970 mustangs. And if so what your result was. Question would be. Do a GM after market column and then go to the trouble of rewiring it to ford, adding a Ford Adaptor, possibly problems mounting to a ford gear box?

Also. The issue of the steering in the 69 and 70 I've researched being so poor compared to new tech that has come out since. Rack-n-Pinion? Anyone put this upgrade on and liked it? Or would you suggest building it the way it was from factory.

Either example is going to have me jumping through loops of Cash. As I need to find a steering wheel on down to the tie rods. I"m at a loss as to go all in with RnP system or just try to find what i need to go back stock steering  with power. Thank you in advance. Please share. God Speed.

Check with CPP they have steering conversion kits. Also Borgesson has steering conversion kits. As alternative to rack N pinion, you might consider a conversion kit that is like the stock 71 and later years which is way better than the stock power steering used in 69-70. Not sure about an aftermarket column. A stock 70 column is completely different than a 69 column (ei 69 ignition key on dash panel), but its the same as a cougar of the same year. For a stock column try west coast classic cougar they will have it, may even one with a tilt.

If you use an aftermarket column, you will have to adapt the firewall mounting plate and under dash brackets to fit your new column.   For a '70 the column would need to have an ignition switch in it, and then you have to adapt that to the steering column wiring adaptor, which also has the directional switch, horn, and emergency flasher wiring in it.

I am sure it has been done many times before.

I have at least two 1970 steering columns laying around if you need one.

I would not consider a steering column not made for your car.  It can always be made to work, but that can consume a whole bunch of time.  there should be enough of the correct used ones available for a very reasonable price.  There are also after market "universal fit" ones available, but I have no idea how perfectly they fit.

Vicfreg has 2, buy one from him.  If you want one all fixed up cute with correct paint and like new, then West Coast Classic Cougar should have one.

I used an iDidIt column to get tilt function in my '69.  I connected it to a joint and got rid of the rag joint.  No road time yet but it went together fine with a half shell bushing that adapted from the slightly narrower tilt column to the stock firewall bracket.  I would imagine they would have a similar column for your '70.
