Nick13 0 Report post Posted August 26, 2019 I have a 1969 Mach 1, I had the differential rebuilt and had to replace one of the axles. I got the axles put back in the car and noticed that the driver side tire was an inch or two recessed into the fender and on the passenger rear side the tire sticks out of the fender about an in or two. I know that the axles are two different lengths. Is it possible that i installed the axles incorrectly, on the wrong sides? and is it safe to drive? thanks,
Vicfreg 772 Report post Posted August 26, 2019 They are for sure different lengths. But, what you describe is interesting. You might have inserted the axles into the wrong side. No big deal, just pull them out and swap them. Pull them out carefully, don't damage the oil seal. One axle should be like 30-7/16" long and the other should be like 26-7/8" long. The axle should be right up against the backing plate. My pics are "big tube" axle, but you get the idea.

skidmarky 50 Report post Posted August 27, 2019 I don't think it would be possible to do this. You could put the short one in the long side, but I don't think you could bolt up the long one in the short side.
