1969Fstback 58 Report post Posted May 8, 2019 I just swapped out my original 302 with another 302 a few weeks ago. Timing at 11 if I remember correctly. It's early 70's 302. It has a brand new summit cam, lifters, pushrods etc. I used my summit 500 carb. it ran great Monday. Got home popped hood to check things out. Noticed 1 wire on the distributor cap wasn't seated. Started up still ran great. Parked it, got in it yesterday could smell fumes badly. I checked the floats looked correct. I still haven't pulled the plugs to check them out. The one thing I noticed that was odd, I have aluminum valve covers which are flat on top and fairly tall. The bolts are counter sunk, and a few had oil in the holes. Seemed kind of odd. I am hoping to pull plugs tonight. See if it's rich or lean. Just stumped on what could have happened to cause it over night. Ideas?
Mach1 Driver 560 Report post Posted May 8, 2019 Is it running rich or just stinking up the garage? Some carbs leak- it could be internal or external. I have an internal leaker that will smell up the garage for a week or more, until the bowl is dry. Its been that way since new and I've never found the source even when bench tested. If you have trouble starting after several days it could be because the bowl is empty like mine.
1969Fstback 58 Report post Posted May 8, 2019 I'm getting a lot of smell when driving. Monday was fine parked it got in it Tuesday and it's like a different car. I'm going to pull some plugs tonight. 1 TexasEd reacted to this
1969Fstback 58 Report post Posted May 9, 2019 I pulled 6 of the 8 plugs. Not rich, they looked real good actually. If anything more on lean side. I put vacuum gauge on it, running around 17. Rechecked the timing and floats. Everything looks good. I am going to check the pcv valve and other 2 plugs this evening.
Pornge 0 Report post Posted May 15, 2019 Hi everyone i have a new built 302 30 over with a comp cam and edelbrock e street heads and a brawler 650 double pump carb i am getting gas wash through my cylinders which has reduced my compression to 60 pounds so i cant set anything up like timing or even run properly. I put trany fluid in the top of my cylinders over night. I got my compression back the next day but it happened again back down to 60 pounds after running it for 30 minutes any suggestions would be helpful thanks john

Also, I already asked you this on your other thread but you did not answer me, so, how do you know you are "getting gas wash through my cylinders which has reduced my compression to 60 pounds"? First of all, you would have to run your engine in nearly a flooded condition for a while before the excessive fuel could do any damage, and since it would be nearly flooded, you wouldn't even be able to drive it, so the chances of excess fuel being the cause of your low compression is nearly zero. bigmal 225 Report post Posted May 15, 2019 I had a similar problem with petrol fumes in my car recently. It was a hot day and turned out to be the fuel cap not venting properly and pressurising the tank. I never got to the bottom of why there were fumes in the cabin but replacing the fuel cap seal fixed the problem.
1969Fstback 58 Report post Posted May 15, 2019 I'll check that. I think I've narrowed down my issues. I had valve cover leak that was blowing back on exhaust. One fouled plug and looks like the bolts that go through valve cover is getting some oil bypassing and blowing on the headers. Seems like the bolts came with Teflon washers but not sure. But, plugs looked good so thinking smell is externa to the motor.
