What filler for quarter panel extensions?

I've measured a difference of 0.144" in the surfaces of the extensions and quarter panels. The extensions are that much lower in areas, and this is the way it came from the factory. I'm assuming that bondo and the like would be too brittle and likely crack and chip. I'm curious how this is done to give it a durable finish. I'd try lead but I'm not sure the pot metal could withstand the heat needed to apply it. What do you guys use to fill this and get the surfaces even?

One of my extensions was real good , the other was crap so i got 2 second hand ones off e bag.

I just prepped the best ones and a little bit of a good quality bondo and they are better than new , use the rubber gasket to prevent paint chipping and i have had no problems.

As Mac said, using the rubber gasket is the key to avoiding chips.

I don't know if lead will stick to quarter extensions. Use a good filler after 80 grit and it should last. Extensions are real thick and stiff, so they won't be flexing and cracking the filler.

Just make sure you use a good Epoxy  and apply  any  filler  you want to blend  the two.  My trick is to tape fishing  line to the qtr panel and apply  the body filler.  Once the filler  starts to  kick,  I pull the wire  through.

I had pretty much the same issue on the front light buckets to fender area. Like others have said , use a quality filler and you will be fine. It's pretty rare that they lined up from factory. 

Even now I'm hearing that the new mustangs imported to Aus are going straight to the panel shops to get the front panels aligned properly.

I have successfully used USC's All-Metal filler a few times.   Since it uses their special "Clear" hardener I believe it is epoxy based with aluminum particles embedded within it.  I do know that when it has properly cured, it is Very Hard.   I have even drilled and tapped it to accept small bolts and machine screws.  I have a few projects that I will be using it on next spring, including a rear extension panel.

I had to repair one of the headlight buckets were it meats the gravel guard, I used fix it stick made by Oatey. I found it in the plumbing dept at Lowes. It is a all purpose bonding putty. You just tear off a little of the putty & mix it in your hands & the instructions say it hardens like steel in minutes.

Or you could go with 3M , spreads like butter and  very easy to sand.

I use j b quick on the mating edge then bond behind that.

So on a edge where it might take a hit you use this stuff and then bondo beyond that to level it out

that link didn't work but it is plain old j b weld on the edge that butts up against the body then fill in the low side behind it with plain old bondo . done it countless times even on and high end show cars. bear in mind that the end caps and front fender extensions (headlight housings) can flex a little when tightened which can sometimes cause almost any type of filler to crack.
