jgkurz 52 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 Hi folks, I need some help with my 69 Mach 1 quarter panel extensions. I am preparing my car for paint and removed the current (red) quarter panel extensions only to find the the passenger side extension is damaged and had been repaired. The driver side was perfect. I bought an original used 69 Mach 1 replacement with the same C9ZB-6328518-C-2 part number as the passenger side extension. The fit of the replacement extension (silver) isn't close to the same fit. Take a look at my photos. Did Ford's tooling vary in tolerances this much? Is it just a matter of looking over several extensions until I find one that is close? shelbyshelby 52 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 To my eyes the top of your extension looks like it runs uphill, as drawn on the paper. Mine aren’t like that. I think they should be like the bottom one. Which one fits level with the trunk lid?
aslanefe 333 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 Which one of the rights does your left side match to? You can turn the marked paper over and put the left side on the mark to see which one it matches.
SWPruett 83 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 Flip them over and please post photos of the back sides of each extension. I fear the red extension has been janked more than is obvious in the pictures you posted.
jgkurz 52 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 The red extension is the one that matches my quarter panel. It's just damaged. Here are the requested pics. I am posting them in a high resolution for better inspection. Ridge Runner 1,112 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 Take the side thst fits and place it back to back with the one that doesnt fit ,the one that doesnt fit must be bent
Ridge Runner 1,112 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 There is somthing very different about the red one ,almost looks like a 70 from the back. Loom inside your quarter ,does it look damaged ? It may be pushed in and the extension also 1 SWPruett reacted to this
Tnstratofam 2 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 My bet is when your passenger side quarter panel was repaired the quarter panel extension was modified to fit the repair. Instead of repairing the quarter panel to match the original body lines someone simply modified the extension to match their repair. Or the extension was repaired and didn't line up quite right with the quarter panel, but instead of replacing it with a correct one they simply modified the panel enough so the two lined up. jgkurz 52 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 Here are more photos. Click on them for the best view. The two original red extensions seem to match. The passenger side does not match the silver replacement at all. I had a 70 to compare and it was even worse. The extensions are pot metal so could they bend?? My novice eyes see no evidence of it being bent, but I am not an expert. The other thought I had was that I was sent a coupe extension. Are the coupe and Mach 1 extensions different? Ridge Runner 1,112 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 I would say the silver one is probably bent ,it looks like blisters in the paint on the face of it ,i bet there is bondo under that
Ridge Runner 1,112 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 The end caps can be bent if you are careful ,i have had to twist them and bend the to get a good fit . Sometimes if they were hit from the rear it spread them
Ridge Runner 1,112 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 I would strip the paint from both of the extensions ,one of them will probably be packed with bondo
aslanefe 333 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 Coupe and convertable extensions are very different than fastback extensions. As far as I remember, my 69 fastback extensions are fiberglass. Don't know which cars got pot metal, which ones got fiberglass extensions.
JET 445 43 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 Why not just use the red one, you can't see the repair when it's on the car.
jgkurz 52 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 I have purchased another used passenger side quarter extension. I'll make a decision on which one to use after it arrives. It will be interesting to see how it compares.
Brian Conway 264 Report post Posted January 28, 2018 FWIW ? The Right/Pass. side ext on my car measures 6.75 " on the diagonal installed. The tape also rides right atop the car's sheet metal taking this measurement. The picture is showing the method I used. Brian
SWPruett 83 Report post Posted January 29, 2018 Nothing screaming out as to the cause of the difference, but as I look at it, I am in agreement with Ridge. I'm betting the silver extension may not be as good as hoped. Also, Brian's measurement could be very helpful in sorting which extension is viable. Something odd going on for sure. Cruzzar 22 Report post Posted January 29, 2018 I'm with Ridge Runner, these extension can be twisted carefully. I was able to realign my '70's extension to fit the fender contour and match the spoiler at the same time. I could be the silver one has bondo but that can easily be removed and determined if it is been damaged in an accident.
MAC390 327 Report post Posted February 3, 2018 I have got my rh extension from the US today. Same part no but the contours are different and the new one fits better than the original one and this one has no damage.
CG in TX 16 Report post Posted February 3, 2018 I have tried no less than 5 different extensions on my build and none fit the same (including reproductions). They didn't fit well from the factory either. To get nice clean lines and fit, I had to add body filler here and there. 1 Shep69 reacted to this
jgkurz 52 Report post Posted February 3, 2018 I received the 2nd replacement extension. It is a closer match to my original, but still off enough that I will probably end up using my original and repairing it. Thank you everyone for the input.
