Oil Capacity

Been reading online about oil capacity of a FE390 in a mustang.

What is the correct oil capacity with filter and has the standard pan.

The FE 390 motor I have had in the past held 5 qts. including the filter with a stock front sump oil pan for a passenger car.  4 qts. in the pan and 1 qt. in the filter.  I'd expect yours to be the same.

For the 428's, a bulletin came out changing it to 6 due to fear of oil starvation at high RPM.  7 for the Super Cobra Jets with the oil cooler.  If you are running a high volume pump, I'd add one extra quart.

Why would you add 1 extra qt for a high volume pump?

Hi volume is pump is more efficient than the return. Thus the sump may become uncovered at high rpm, sucking air.

High volume pumps can fill the valve covers up at high RPMs on some motors.

With not so much oil left in the oil pan.

(My 351c comes to mind)

use good conventional oil with lots of zddp.
 

stick a number 68 or 70 main jet in the oil hole in the head that feeds the rocker arm. end of excessive top end oiling problem.
