stangman68 95 Report post Posted October 30, 2017 Anyone had issues with a big block fuel pump before....Mine is seeping or leaking from the screws all around the top. I'm assuming it is causing a vaccum leak of sometype. I took it out and drove around 25, 30 miles or so with no issues, then all of a sudden it bogged or made some slight hesitations as i feathered the gas pedal. Then just died. It did not start back up right away. But after waiting about 5 minutes and trying again, it started up,and i drove home with no further issues......do these pumps typically leak, or should i remove it and address. It had a new diaphrame kit installed at rebuild.
1969_Mach1 333 Report post Posted October 30, 2017 Not familiar with your big block fuel pump. But I wonder if it's pumping any fuel into the crankcase which could be very bad. I wouldn't keep driving it until you are certain the leak is fixed.
Brian Conway 264 Report post Posted October 30, 2017 Quote The fuel pump on my 428. If yours looks like this one; check to see that the gasket/diaphram got put in after the rebuild and also check all the screws for tightness. Brian
Dave R. 85 Report post Posted October 31, 2017 +1 on snugging the screws. The pump is obviously working, somewhat. The seeping must be stopped before any other problem can be diagnosed. Dave R.

Brian Brian, is that a filter on the suction side of your fuel pump? I have always heard that a filter should be on the pressure side of the pump. Especially a mechanical pump. Whatever works I guess. Dave R.
1969_Mach1 333 Report post Posted October 31, 2017 rave R., you are correct. The fuel filter should be on the pressure side of the pump. There is a screen in the fuel tank to stop large degree from getting to the pump. If there is no place foe a filter on the pressure side and he is using a Holley carb, Holley sells fuel filters to go inside the fuel inlets at the fuel bowls. Dave R. 85 Report post Posted October 31, 2017 I recall a porous filter that went inside the bowl inlet. Looked like a stone but was bronze colored. Dave R.
1969_Mach1 333 Report post Posted October 31, 2017 That's right. It's brass, porous and has a spring behind it to hold it in place. I thought Holley also offered one in a paper element. Been a while since I looked.
Dave R. 85 Report post Posted October 31, 2017 I also remember a paper element but not sure if it was Holley or aftermarket. Dave R.
Vicfreg 771 Report post Posted November 2, 2017 Check the soft parts in the pump. I just had some issues with Ethanol eating my rubber parts in the fuel system...
Ridge Runner 1,112 Report post Posted November 2, 2017 I have gone through 4 fuel pumps on my sand blaster ,the new gas eats the diaphram and it will go into the crankcase .Finally put an electric pump on it

1969_Mach1 333 Report post Posted November 2, 2017 In my area of California, according to the pumps at my local gas stations the fuel is 15% ethanol. So far, I haven experienced any issues from it. I also add Sta-Bil and Torco Accelerator to it.

Brian Conway 264 Report post Posted November 8, 2017 Not hearing back from the original poster I will assume he solved his leaking fuel pump problem ? To address some of the questions posed about my fuel pump filter location. Yes the fuel filters, recommended by Carter Fuel Pumps, position should be between the pump and the carb. I asked the Carter Tech and Carter also is aware of the ethanol issue. I was not aware Holley was making a filter that would work for my 3310-1 carb. I have the filter, nifty little set up, and will be correcting my fuel filter location. Thanks for the help. Brian
Brian Conway 264 Report post Posted February 6, 2018 Recently got around to installing the Holley Fuel filters. Have abandoned the inline filter before the pump and like the new look. Brian
