1969_Mach1 333 Report post Posted May 13, 2017 I am rebuilding my close ratio 4sp toploader transmission. My input shaft is in good condition. But, I have noticed some of the replacement input shafts have 2 or 3 syncro engagement teeth removed. Is that so the input shaft can be installed and removed without dropping the cluster gear to the bottom of the case? If so, I might go that route and make assembly a little easier. Even with a dummy shaft and assembly grease in the counter gears I worry about loosing a needle bearing, one of the small flat washers on the outside of the needle bearings, or a thrust washer during assembly. mqu02 30 Report post Posted May 16, 2017 You are correct that the missing teeth are there to help with reassembly, and if you get one, you still may have to drop the front side of the counter gears (only pull the shaft out a little bit, and keep the inner spacer engaged) on a close ratio transmission.
