Sport mirrors installation questions

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody!

First, sorry for my bad english, I'm belgian.

I own a 69 Fastback (picture attached - 1 & 2) and I'd like to replace my current mirrors by some sport ones. I love the look of the Boss 429.

1) Can somebody confirm me that these ones are the same as the Boss 429 ?

2) My current ones look like the basic Scott Drake mirrors, picture 3 (I'm not sure which brand is it). Do you think that the entraxe between holes and screws are the same as the sport ones ?

3) Is there a hole (for the remote control) by default in the door, under the original mirror or do I have to drill it ? (Remote controll was not ordered with the car in 69).

4) I don't know where I have to put the remote control on the door panel, inside the car. I can't find any information regarding that...

I'm a newbie but I really want to do that by myself. I also know that I'll have to paint the new mirrors but it's another stuff :)

Many thanks in advance for your help on that !!

Welcome to the forum- nice car.

The attachment screws for my mirrors are 7.0" apart. You'll probably need a new door panel to mount the remote.attachicon.gifMustang mirror.jpg

New door panel :( :(

My car is from 1st April 69, I see on CJ that I have to use that model: http://www.cjponyparts.com/mirror-racing-driver-side-after-2-25-1969-1970/p/ME4L/ and it's not compatible with the bezel showed in your picture.

The knob compatible with my car is at 90 degrees angle. Looks like yours is straight (this one: http://www.cjponyparts.com/mirror-racing-driver-side-pre-2-24-1969/p/ME32L/ ) no ?

I have the 90 degree knob and have trouble with it securing in the fitting because I can't route the cables to give me enough slack. I was told those are for '70 mustangs (don't know if that is true). If I did it again I'd get the straight version.

Welcome to the forum REmmm, nice Mustang! Before I'd ever buy after market anything, if check for used first. Rsanter a member here and has many use parts available. I'd send him a private message and/or put an ad in the For Sale/Wanted forum. You should be able to cut a round hole in the door trim panel for the adjuster knob.

The cut out for the remote cable  is already in your door and under your std. mirror (same as pic Brian posted).   What you don't have and need to add is the 2nd mounting hole for the longer racing mirrors.   Racing mirrors use the same forward hole as std. mirrors, it is just the rear hole that needs to be added ... you can also see the un-used mounting hole with no threaded insert in it for a std. mirror (like yours) in Brian's pic.

All deluxe interior cars (padded molded door panels with woodgrain inserts) came with a driver's side remote mirror so I'm assuming your car has the plain std. interior door panels.   These are a flat Masonite panel covered in embossed padded vinyl with a separate padded armrest and separate upper metal trim.

If your car still has the original std. interior door panels, the back side of the Masonite has perforations for the mirror control and the door shell has a matching cut-out.   This should be a rectangular-ish cut-out for the '69 style bezel that would use the straight ended cable type mirror.   You just need to buy the '69 mirror control bezel and metal backing bracket for the bezel, the racing mirrors, and (2) 10-24 threaded inserts for the rear racing mirror mounting holes.

69RavenConv's pic above is of a std. interior door panel with the '69 remote mirror bezel.

Hi all!

Many thanks for your advices on that!

Here is my inside door panel (attached), do you think it's possible to make a proper installation of the interior remote mirror bezel with that kind of panel ? Is it the same as yours 69RavenConv ?

I'll check my LH mirror tonight to see if that RC hole exists or if it has been refilled...

What I need: (please confirm)

- LH mirror with straight cable - http://www.cjponyparts.com/mirror-racing-driver-side-pre-2-24-1969/p/ME32L/

- RH mirror - http://www.cjponyparts.com/remote-mirror-companion-racing-mach-1-style-passenger-side-1969-1970/p/ME4R/

- Interior Remote Mirror Bezel - http://www.cjponyparts.com/interior-remote-mirror-bezel-1969/p/ME2B/

- This ? https://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/sdk-c7az17696mk/overview/year/1969/make/ford/model/mustang

- Do I need this ? http://www.cjponyparts.com/sport-mirror-bezel-nut-1969/p/HW1528/

As it takes long time to reach Belgium and cost much more (100$ is finally about 220€ with shipping, customs, etc. :( ) I want to be sure about what I have to order :)

I'll buy at MU but it's closed for us during the day (Maintenance).

Do you know also if there is a better brand than another or they are all from Scott Drake?

Lots of questions, sorry and again, many thanks for your help!!!!!

It appears that the LH Mirror assembly includes the chrome nut so you should not need the last item.

The interior bezel includes the rear mounting plate you need (and probably the nuts to secure it to the panel) so you should be set there.

I've never used the rubber type threaded inserts that you list from Summit that are claimed to be correct reproduction Ford replacements.   Original nutserts are pot metal and I've always used industrial metal threaded inserts like these ...

https://www.mcmaster.com/#95105a127/=15w5q5c

Your door panel looks to be original or correct replacement for std. interior which is the same as 69RavenConv's pic.

The panel is real easy to remove if you want to check for the perforated cut out on the back side for the bezel.   You just need to remove the door lock post and the two screws holding the upper metal trim and it will come off.   You "should" then be able to just pull the Masonite interior door panel away from the door to see if the perforated cut-out is there.   If not, then remove the armrest and the window crank ... there will be a row of panel clips around the perimeter of the panel (sides & bottom only).   You need to be careful prying these using a plastic interior trim tool so you avoid scratching the painted door or damaging the Masonite panel that they are clipped to.

If upon removal of the panel you find a "round" perforated cut-out in the Masonite instead of a rectangular one, then you should get the '70 style LH mirror with the 90Deg ended cable-control.

Is it the same as yours 69RavenConv ?

Yes, it is the same. Follow Doug's instructions in the last post. I agree with Doug, use riv-nuts to attach the mirror to the door. Also, if your interior panel is a reproduction, it probably doesn't have the perforations showing where and how to remove the material for the inside bezel. I made a template from my factory panel and can probably find it if you would like the measurements. Good luck

I'm going to remove panels to see what's behind them!

Regarding the quality of the sport mirrors, are there some different qualities ? Except original ones, are they all from SD ? Prices are quiete different from a provider to an other.

SR: 90° - $121 https://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/sdk-d1zz-17696-l/overview/make/ford/model/mustang

They are probably all the from same source but I don't know that for a fact. I have had good luck dealing with all 3 of the Mustang vendors you list.

I usually stay away from Summit for vintage stuff. Even though I really like Summit and shop at the local store often, their old car stuff (like mirrors) is often a generic part that looks ok on an old car but may not be 100% correct. A place like NPD will source the most correct part they can find.

Just my 2 cents worth, you're probably ok ordering from any of the sites you listed. Also, original Ford mirrors show up on eBay occasionally. As mentioned above, that's a good option as well - no reproduction is ever as good as OEM. Good luck.
