Seriously, it doesn't cost much to file a provisional patent. It lasts a year and that will give you enough time to sell the idea to one of those specialty tool makers like Lisle. Even if it doesn't make you rich, at least you'll get more than if you just walk away from it.

This is one of those tools that is so badly needed but so seldomly used, that we can never find anyone willing to go ahead and make one.

Maybe one way of dealing with this would be to create a "tool-kite" program...  One guy makes an awesome tool and then we set up a program where tool inventor dude gets sent $5 everytime it is sent to a new guy for use.  New guy sends tool maker his fee, then sends shipping fees to guy who has it, and he is registered as current location of the tool.  I guess who is gonna track the details - devil is always in the details, but it would be nice to have such a program going for these specialty items.
