Ridge Runner 1,113 Report post Posted July 1, 2016 I started in on the floor pan this morning .Drilled holes for plug welds and got out my clamping tool for pulling the floor tight to the floor support . With a few screws to keep it tight ,i started welding . Everything went good until around 11 when the fan came on on my Miller ..usually only comes on after about 1 hour welding 1/4 -1/2 inch thick steel . It ran for a good 20 minutes ,usually only runs a minute or two . It was so hot out side anything made of metal would burn you if you picked it up ,and the welder was setting in the sun . I finally had to unplug it and move it in the shade ,didn't want it to burn up .I will have to wait until early tomorrow morning to finish up .I think it is supposed to be around 106* today . 1 SWPruett reacted to this
RPM 1,190 Report post Posted July 1, 2016 At least you picked a cooler day of the week to do the welding. And I'm guessing you didn't have to do any preheating of the metal :)
Ash 145 Report post Posted July 2, 2016 Only 106? That's nearly a winter day here...just kidding. My shed usually floats around the 120's in summer. Gets a tad warm I must say. I like your clamping tool. I'm heading towards this point myself and may just use your initiative when welding mine in. cheers!
Ridge Runner 1,113 Report post Posted July 2, 2016 Well ,the temp finaly dropped ,only 100 * .I finished up the floor and welded in the seat boxes .I will grind the welds when it is on the rotisserie ,i dont plan on crawling back inside that thing again. A pinch of this and a DASH of that .I sand blasted the dash and primered it ,and drilled the cowl for plug welds . All welded in and the welds ground .It is ready to go on the rotisserie ...soon as i get the 64 1/2 off . I still have a few small patches to do but they will be done on the rotisserie. Patriotgamez 14 Report post Posted July 2, 2016 That's about how far apart I spaced my holes when I did the floor... which is better then what the factory did. You look at a lot of the other builds and they have twice that many! Is it over cautious? added strength/rigidity? or the notion that the next poor bastard to replace the floor will lose his mind drilling out welds? Ridge Runner 1,113 Report post Posted July 2, 2016 This type of weld is a lot stronger than a regular spot weld ,a lot of the factory welds didn't even hold .And i am usually that poor bastard that hast to drill out those welds ..and they are not fun HAHA. You would hate me if you ever had to remove one of my floors lol... The dash came out nice. Sounds like you need to build another rotisserie, (much like myself) to keep all the projects flowing. Ridge Runner 1,113 Report post Posted July 4, 2016 I have had to remove panels that i have replaced due to wrecks ,and it is not fun .You think a factory spot weld is hard to drill ,try a plug weld . 1 70Nightmare reacted to this

Ash 145 Report post Posted July 5, 2016 Does it ever stop? As I say to my wife, there are far worse things I could be spending my time and money on. At least I'm not sitting at the pub every arvo or all weekend.
