I have a hurst shifter, and you can get shorter shift levers, and a short throw shifter ( just moves the pivot point up).

I had to replace the stock shifter after my T5 installation, for the same reasons as you - too long on the throw to 1-3-5. 

Hurst make a nice shifter with correct mounting to the stock T5 'stub'.  About 12 inches tall, with about a 4 inch curve, it works perfectly for me with the stock pivot.  I got the Hurst ball shifter knob, which looks pretty good on the shaft, kind of retro, but right for the car.

 

I have pics but photoshop is acting crazy right now.  Will post if it clears up. 

 

The shifter is a common Hurst item.  I got mine at Lane Automotive couple years back, but most Mustang parts vendors will have them.

anyone wanting a conversion Hurst shifter like the one cj's sells. I checked the web. the  price range is from $97-$130 I just bought one from a seller on e-bay for $85  seller's name is "Hurst-Shifters" go figure! he had 10 of them he's down to 5 now his price is $97 or best offer I made a offer of $85. it was accepted right then. I just did a search for Hurst Shifter 5388022 and found him. I wouldn't wait if you want one. this is for the T-5 only, will not work with the TKO 500 or 600
