Trunk hinges.....

does anyone know if trunk hinges get primed before painting or are they normally just sprayed body color right over the metal? Was wondering bc of the metal coil spring.

I have to believe they had some sort of primer but no proof. I know the trunks were painted body color with the deck lid attached at the factory.

mine appeared to have been red oxide primer but don't know if it is original or not.

That's a good question for which I can not correctly answer. On the other hand, I would have to think in order for the paint to adhere to the metal properly, they would have had some form of primer applied. Even if it was sparse / minimal.

If you want it to stick, then you need to Epoxy prime them first. Any bare metal needs some type of primer or sealer.

My coupe had primer on the hinges. Mine was built in San Jose, so don't know if that was the same as other plants.

I think they were kind of like everything else in the trunk ,it got a mist of primer that probably didn't cover all and then painted .

I have always seen a bare spot where the hinge was bolted to the body

They are attached to the body, then they got whatever primer was going to hit them and the area they are in then they were painted

I think Bob is right.....now that I think about it, mine were bare metal where they were inside the trunk lid (for mounting) . I guess my main concern was getting body color to stick to the coil springs....which by the way should never be directly sandblasted. You may find sandblasting changes the temper end of the coils.
