69 engine replacement

Recommended Posts

I have a 6 cylinder 3 speed 1969 mustang convertible.that needs to have it's non original engine replaced.

thinking of replacing  the engine with a 302 (out of a 70 mustang), and keep the same transmission.

what  modifications  need to be made (besides replacing the radiator, motor mounts etc). to make the replacement smooth

dont know if the bell housing is the same but you will also need.

engine gauge feed wire harness.

v8 throttle cable and bracket.

v8 trans kick down

v8 fan blade

1650 lb mcleod 3 finger pressure plate

should also get:

v8 front springs

v8 front sway bar

Agree with everything that barnett said.

Was it a 250 or a 200 six ??

250 six came with 5-lug wheels and same brakes & suspension as 302, so all you would need is the V8 springs & maybe sway bar.

If it had a 200, it came with 4-lug wheels, smaller brakes, and possibly suspension components which should all be up-graded to 5-lug.

I would be interested to see how that trans kickdown works with that Mcleod pressure plate. ;)

Thanks for all your feed back, it was very helpful, and now i have something to work with.

I am developing a check list with estimated costs to see if it is worth the extra $$ to make the change.

I was told by several people  that if I made the change to a V8 the value of a mustang would increase 20% is this true or BS ?

I will let you know what my plans are for my weekend mean machine.

Thanks again

on average, your car will be worth more than a 6 cylinder would be, especially if you change everything over to V8 specs, however, it will still be worth significantly less than a comparable real V8 car.
