What brakes with magnum 500 wheels

Recommended Posts

Just keen to hear what front disc brakes people are using with 15inch magnum 500 wheels, the reason I ask is I was going to use a conversion kit with 298 rotors and late model twin position calipers.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FORD-MUSTANG-BIG-BRAKES-GT-SHELBY-64-TO-69-DRUM-FRONT-TO-DISC-KIT-XM-XP-FALCON-/311324267161?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item487c5f5299

I'm not a 100% sure if the 15 inch rims will clear. I know the Kelsey hayes brakes will fit, but I'm not real sure what there braking performance is like... I know that chocostang and MP brakes have nice looking K/H kits.

The 300 kit for XW-XF Falcons will fit with your Mustang with Magnum 500 wheels.

I have done a disc brake conversion to the 4 piston Kelsey Hayes brakes and they work very well.

Are you doing this on a Mustang?  Because there is more to it than just the rotors and calipers.  Year of car is critical, and whether the car is a V8 from factory, and what spindles you have.  Disc brake or drum brake spindles.

Can you explain a bit more?

This is an XF Falcon set up I bought for my coupe. I was going to use this until I came into some cash and went with the 330mm set up. It'll fit in a 14 or 15 inch wheel but you need to fit XY-XF spindles and large centre wheels. With early rotors it will fit small centre wheels.

I bought the MP setup for mine.  Nice upgrade.  They also sell a rear drum brake kit upgrade to 11x2".  For those with Disc/Drum looking for a decent, cost effective upgrade you can beat it.  I'll be pulling/selling my set up.  I'll post them in the for sale section....

15x7 up front - no issues.  V8 spindles.

Hi Glenn, it isn't a kit as such, just parts bought separately to piece together an XF conversion for my car. It's all stock XF Falcon parts with dimpled/slotted rotors and braided front hoses.

If you wanted to do similar the easiest way would be to get a complete spindle/rotor/caliper set from an XF and rebuild it all. If your magnums are small centre use XY-XB rotors in place of XF. You'll need to use XD-XF outer tie rod ends as well. I put the brake set up for sale on Mustangtech for $550 with a set of spindles but haven't got any replies so its just gathering dust in the shed.

Sunbury brakes sell the same set up on ebay for around $900. I'll try and find a link.

Thanks for all the replies, Coz how did you find MP brakes to deal with??

No issues.  Had to call and ask about the 11x2" drums.  They are truck rears but fit a 9" Big Ford rear.  Shipped to my house within the week.  Easy to install.

I was thinking of ordering those drum brakes as I have a new quick performane 9 inch housing with the Torino big bearings.

I'll probably just stick to using my drum brake spindles, I don't like swapping and changing too much, but thanks anyway Shaun, how'd your falcon ute seats end up working out ??
