holley runing rich all the time

Recommended Posts

.

did you actually drive it with 18 at idle?

if so how did it run, better or worse?

are you brave enough to remove your points plate so you can advance your mechanical advance?

ok, you can't run a 2 port vacuum can, you need to buy a standard motor products p/n vc31 at some point.

you have enough advance at cruise, therefore, your carb is not rich because of too little timing.

we need to see a spark plug and i think we need to correct your timing before you mess with the carb jets because if we give it more advance the little over rich condition you may now have will be reduced.

this is what is under the points plate. there are 2 big slots with numbers on them. you want the little arm that is in the lower slot to be in the slot with the highest number. . in the center of the shaft there is a foam piece.

remove foam piece.

remove thin wire clip.

pull up on shaft. this will remove the advance.

clean and grease it lightly inside.

turn it 180 degrees so the arm is in the slot with the biggest number.

reassemble.

rotate move plug wires 180 degrees

leave your vacuum plugged.

set idle timing to 12.

give us new timing readings.

tell us if engine runs rough at any point.

test drive car with vacuum plugged.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The vacuum can you need looks like this.

of you want to fix it. you need to do the following.

unbolt distributor.

mark the distributor body where the rotor tip points.

mark the body exactly where the back of the rotor points. this will be 180 degrees.

lift it up around 1 1/2".

as you lift it the rotor will rotate slightly due to the shape of the gear so as you install it, it will rotate slightly also.

now, rotate the rotor exactly 180 degrees from where it is now and reinsyall it.

as the distributor drops down the rotor will rotate and end ip lining up with the mark you put on the distributor body.

rotate the vody so it points in the same direction it was before removal.

now, rotate the advance unit 180 degrees.

set timing to 12.

leave vacuum advamnvce off.

rotate the rotir ex

no, no, no. do not rotate the body, rotate the rotor once the distributor is lifted up 1 1/2".

your vac adv will still point exactly where it does now.

this is easy, just read my directions one line at a time very carefully. you're almost there

your car will haul a_s... and you will have more green lites when we are done.

this is why i make the big bucks [i wish], lol.

once your distributor is back in, pull a few plug wires off, have someone turn the engine over while you set the timing to 10 - 14. if no one is there you can jump the solenoid with a screw driver and check the timing.

reconnect wires after timing is close then start engine and finish setting timing.

do not use the vacuum adv, bad things might happen.

after we are all done and you get a new vac can, we will set it up so it will be connected to ported vac and it will add a total of around 10 degrees.
