1969 Mach 1 Pro-Touring

Recommended Posts

Are there any custom grilled out there that have a hex or oval mesh? So not the stock or the billet grille.

Something that looks more like modern cars.

Only thing I've seen is the Anvil grille, which doesn't seem like something you can buy.

Just curious...

Thanks.

I have had my 1969 Mach 1 since I was 15 (almost 12 years). My father and I finished restoring the car when I was 17. I drove the car a few thousand miles before parking in to upgrade the suspension and engine. After taking a lot of the car apart, my busy life kicked in and I never got around to finishing the car.

Fast forward to this month, I am finally able to get back to work on the car. Should have it finished within 2 months or so.

The car has been sitting inside for years, worked on very little here and there. My dad has painted show cars for nearly 30 years and we both did every bit of the work to this car. Most of the floor pans and sheet metal are original except for the typical areas, and every inch of the car has been coated with Eastwood Rust Encapsulator.

I have now decided to go the Pro-Touring route with the car. I make more than I did when I was 17 and now have a little more time to really do the car the way I want. The paint will still be flawless after a little buffing so its just time to re-do the interior, suspension, finish the engine and upgrade the wheels.

Here is the timeline of the car:

Here is the car when I first got it after I started stripping the paint. Obviously, the previous owner decided to things a little differently with the car. Its originally supposed to be Candle Apple Red, Black Deluxe Interior, 351W 2BBL, FMX.

Tan vinyl was stapled over everything and most of the original Mach 1 stuff was gone.

This is when I tore the car back apart to smooth the engine compartment, paint a few things like the Mach 1 mirrors and reverse light, and re-do the suspension, brakes, and finish the interior. It sat for many, many years.

Did some test fitting with my 18x10 Boze Forged wheels with 295/35's from my 94.

I will be doing a 1" mini tub in order to fit 18x11's with a 295-315 tire. There is 1" between the fold-down-rear-seat interior panels and the wheel wells, so I am able to mini-tub 1" and still retain a fully functioning fold down.

The Air Ride system mounts in the same position as the original leafs, but the lower arms are offset and allow .75" extra space compared to the leafs.

These didnt fit at all; backspacing was all wrong

Looks like a great car and I like the story. I'm 27 as well and am restoring a '70 Mach 1 after restoring a few other '69s, starting when I was 15 with a black '70 Mach. Great to see another person my age committed to quality work with a good understanding of these cars.

Thanks guys

There is so much to the story. I almost had the give the car up a couple times. I'm glad I stuck with it.

I did everything on my 94 as well, it basically needed a complete restoration like the 69 minus the rust repair. I have done one other 69 Sportsroof, 67 fastback, and have helped my dad with a dozen others.

Here's my 94 right before I parked it due to internal damage on the 327 Stroker. I am currently shaving the engine compartment and finishing a 331 stroker with a Vortec S-Trim. This is what it looked like when I bought it, when I drove it, and then when I parked it. This car is on the back burner until the Mach is done.

I have had 4 different motors, 3 different suspension set-ups, 4 different wheels, 2 different interiors... It has been through a lot

Nice, make sure to post some pictures and impression of them when you get them installed. I've been thinking of getting a set of them,

I sure will. I did a lot of research before I bought. I was hard to pay almost double from the TCP set-up, but my dad has the TCP X-Brace set-up on one of his 67 Fastbacks, and this Maier set-up looks so much stronger; plus they are full length subframes that mount in 2 points on each rail rather than one point like every other subframe connector.

I have not done much over the past few months. I have a 60 hour per week job, a 3 year old girl and a boy due in August. I wish I could give this car more time. I expect to have it back on the road in July (I hope).

So far my Dad and I have just removed the old suspension and started test fitting some on the Air Ride stuff. I also just got my Street or Track billet export brace.

At the same time as the Air Ride install I'll be replacing my stock AC with Vintage Air, replacing all glass with new glass, and replacing my front disc brakes with red 14" 6 piston Wilwoods.

Here are the only pictures I have for now.
