Thunderscrash 10 Report post Posted May 22, 2014 Cj's is having a 20% off sale now thru the 26th and they have a few flywheels for sale. I just don't know which one I need. I have a 10.5" clutch and I know I need 28oz but can anyone tell me if I need a 157 tooth or 164 tooth? I know it has to do with the starters but I'm just not sure which one I need. I'm also not completely sure what motor is in my car, its either a 289 or a 302 but I haven't ran the numbers yet to know for sure. I know it's not original to the car but I don't think it's ever been opened up.
SA69mach 39 Report post Posted May 22, 2014 157T. This http://www.cjponyparts.com/ford-racing-flywheel-steel-157t-28-2-oz-balance-289-302-351-1965-1981/p/M6375A302B/ or this http://www.cjponyparts.com/ford-racing-flywheel-aluminum-157t-28-2-oz-balance-289-302-351-1965-1981/p/M6375A302AB/ or this http://www.cjponyparts.com/flywheel-cast-iron-157t-28-oz-manual-transmission-260-289-302-351w-1965-1968/p/MTF1/ They will all work with a 10.5 inch diaphragm clutch and work with a 289 or 302 engine. I assume you have the T5 bell housing, since you already have the 10.5 inch clutch. One thing, be sure your flywheel center is a tight and snug fit on the crankshaft end. Mine was not and even though the bolts tightened up snug, the wheel was already off center. Caused a darned annoying vibration that was hard to trace. I strongly suggest you have your flywheel and clutch balanced before installing. It is good insurance and the easiest time to do it, while the clutch and flywheel are out. I expected my fancy new high dollar parts to be perfect balance, but they were both out. YOu may have better luck, but, just saying..... In fact, when you troll through the posts on T5 swaps, there are a lot of cases of vibrations following the swap. common causes are poly trans mounts and/or poly engine mounts - seems to be no problems with rubber. Anyway, don't sweat it unless you get a vibration after you install
Thunderscrash 10 Report post Posted May 22, 2014 Yes, sorry, I do have the t5 bell. I'm leaning toward the cheaper flywheel just because I'm trying to get the swap done on a bit of a budget then down the road I can spend more. I just wasn't sure if it was a 157tooth or 164 tooth that I need. Since all your links where to 157 tooth flywheels I assume that's my answer. Thank you. SA69mach 39 Report post Posted May 23, 2014 Yes. 157 teeth (157T) Don't drop the cast flywheel. They crack and shatter. That is why billet or forged is safer. There is no way to know the treatment of the thing before you buy it.
