vert top fluid

Recommended Posts

Just installed my power top frame. I can hear the motor work, but the top does'nt move. I think I need to add oil (some was lost on removal) and bleed the system. What is the correct way to do this and what kind of oil to I use? It is a 69. Thanks.

+1

If still using the original lines give them a good once over as well first, nothing worse than having one burst under pressure, especialy if it happens with a fully installed interior while being caught in an unexpected shower.

Use a turkey baster or a baby nasal asparator (you know the rubber bulb with a stem that sucks baby snot ) to fill the vert motor with ATF fluid. Saves a lot of clean-up time trying to get the fluid in the fill hole of the motor.

You will have to fill it up and run it a bit to get the air out, then add a bit more fluid, run a bit more, and repeat. I never bleed it, it kind of does it itself after you use it. The air ends up in the fluid reservior.

The right parts store should have type A ATF. I do not knwo if it really should not make that much difference. Maybe Mercon or others would be hard on the plastics hose and gaskets in your pump? To be safe, find some type A. Any tranny repair shop should also have type A around, but maybe only in a 5 gallon bucket. Take in a small jar and have them sell you a quart.
