Battery Size

Recommended Posts

I need to get a battery for my 428 Cobra Jet. I measured my battery tray and it's looking like a group 24 battery size is what I need. All the guys on the 428 registry are saying group 27 battery is what 69 428CJ's originally came out with.

I did a rough measurement on my repro battery tray and it's 10.5"L x 7"W.

Group 24 batteries are 10"

Group 27 batteries are 12" +

If I can get a group 24 battery with 700+ CCA, would that work?

Yes, the group number just specifies the physical dimensions (including which side the + and - posts are located), the CCA specifies the electrical current it can provide. Your starter only cares about the electrical part.

The group 27 battery was an option available. My dads 70 351c has the 27 battery. If yourcar doesn't have the 27 tray it either didn't come with it from the factory or over the years the wrong replacement was installed.

My 69 was originally a 390 car but had the 24 group battery

No need to feel dumb. I was going to ask a similar question.

My '70 Mach 1 with a 351 had a group 27 battery when I bought it. There was so little left of the battery tray, I can't tell if the car had a group 27 battery tray or if someone just crammed in an oversized battery.

Does anyone know if the group 27 battery option would show up on a Marti report? It's not listed on my report, but I don't know if it would be.
