howlitzer 10 Report post Posted May 12, 2012 I am redoing a 69 fastback and am thinking of going to a modern alternator with an HEI distributor. Does anyone have any experience with this and if so, can I get rid of the voltage regulator.
miketyler 15 Report post Posted May 12, 2012 That's a very popular upgrade. Installing the new 1 wire or even the Ford 3G style alt can eliminate the ext voltage regulator. In fact I think PA makes a kit that works with the 3G unit that includes a dummy VR that connects to the alt to retain the stock appearance. The install on the HEI can vary depending on which distributor product you select. A popular one is either the Duraspark or the aftermarket Pertronix. The latter retains your old stock distributor and adds the performance of a multi spark discharge pointless ignition.
