I've got all the mechanical and electrical buttoned up (I think)  Going to get some gas and bring it back to fill it up and start it. :)

So I never posted it in this thread but it was at that point that I was taking it to get the AC system charged and it backed into a tree damaging the passenger door, front fender and ripping the side mirror off.  I couldn't even look at the car for a few weeks.

I took it to a couple shows with the dents and then I got in touch with a new body shop since the one I was waiting on was taking forever and it ihas been at that shop since Feb 2023.  The engine was pulled and inspected and found to not be the original 302 block so I sold it and the transmission.  Will be installing a built T5 and the plan is to build a roller 351W with stock bottom end and new intake, headers and carb.  I already have the carb.

Man that sucks. After all the hard work you done.

That car is like family, watching your kids grow up with it. You gotta keep it till the last one graduates and you take each one in it.

I did the MDL cable clutch conversion on mine and very happy with the fit and quality. Happy to recommend it.

Yes, doing the modern drive line conversion.  Pretty excited to make the car faster than my 2013 F150 twin turbo truck.

Have done two of the Modern Drive line conversions. Love the T5Z in my current build, what I don't like is the cable clutch they sell. If I were to do it over, I would go with mustang steve's set up, or full hydraulics. What rear end do you have? Might want to consider that too with the T5Z. I have a 3.0 rear, and it's great on the highway in 5th gear. I think 3:25 - or 3:50 would be perfect with a t-5.

I have an 8” and planning to go with 3.80 gears

3.50 here and a TKO600 with .82 5th.

Not really an overdrive as such but it does drop the revs.

If you can get a T5 gearset with a close ratio setup like a 2.9-2.7 1st or taller and a .6-.7 5th that would be the best of both worlds.

It has a 3.35 first and .63 overdrive gear which is why I’m going with the 3.80 rear.  The transmission is already bought but not the new  3rd member. I was told the 2.95 first gears were in the v6 cars.

I'm no rocket scientist, but with a 3.35 first gear and 3.80 rear gear, I'd think first gear would be pretty much worthless. I've got 3.25 first gear, 3.25 rear gear and 27 inch tall rear tires, and first gear at 2,400 rpm is only 18 mph. I'm thinking of going to 3.00 or 2.75:1 rear gears. My OD gear is .78.

Don't forget to figure in your tire size. Plenty of online calculators to compute this.

I have a T5Z behind my 351 Cleveland, with a 9inch 3.00 open diff. My TZ5 is the following:

T5Z (MDL purchase)- 2.95, 1.94, 1.34, 1, .63 OD
Rear - P235/60R-15 BFGOODRICH RADIAL T/A (28.9)
Front - P215/60R-15 BFGOODRICH RADIAL T/A (26.9)

Currently when I shift into 5th, the RPS drop below 2000K, at 75MPH. The Cleveland does not like that, it likes higher RPMs.
4th gear is used the most on the highway.

Planning on changing out the 3:00, leaning towards  3:55. I still want a usable 1st gear.

If and when you change out the 3.00:1 gears, and if you want to sell them, let me know please.

Ed, the issue with that gearset is 1st gear will not travel very far, the jump to 2nd will be large and if you have a decent cam it will fall off and go out of the power band. Or, 2nd will be close to 1st but a big jump to 3rd and again, you fall off the cam.

It depends on what you want - I am happy for mine to be a quick car so I paid for the TKO600 with the 2.87 1st gear. I have 3.50 and still need to use first in slow corners as the cam makes it shunt. If yours is a standard motor and you aren't worried about beating the kid in the econobox next to you it will probably be OK.

I think the Fox body Cobra and terminators had a good gearset. If the bank statement allows maybe you could look at that? G-Force also do a good strong gearset which could be an option.

I already bought the transmission.  The gears are:  3.35, 1.93, 1.26, 1, .068

I have 26" Diameter tires

The engine will easily spin up to 6000 RPM in aggressive driving if I put in 5500 rpm shift points this is what it looks like with 3.8 gears

image.png.b8842e83f2868f475e8a9111652cde6c.png

For more moderate driving I did the math and these are my speeds at 3,000 RPMs in each gear  The different between 3.55 and 3.8 is 1.3 MPH in first but in 5th cruising at 70 MPH is 2184 RPM with 3.55 and 2338 with 3.8 gears.  Fifth is not usable at 3.55 until about 65 MPH (2000 RPM) but with 3.8 2000 RPM is 60mph.  I think the 3.8 is the best balance of high and low.

3000 RPM Speeds

  3.55 3.8 Difference
1st 19.52 18.24 -1.28
2nd 33.88 31.63 -2.25
3rd 51.9 48.48 -3.42
4th 65.39 61.09 -4.3
5th 96.17 89.94 -6.23

Yes, same here.  I also outsource the paint and body work.  I don't have the talent/patience for it...

Having just gone through this experience, I can share some lessons learned, as my car was painted during the summer.

You can send me a message on the forum and I can get you my contact info and we can have a call about some things I would do differently.

I may have your # but, send the info anyway.

Will do. They have had my car since February and I know it turned into more work than they anticipated. They may not make anything on it with the way it has gone but they have paid attention to detail and I don’t mind it going slow as long as they are making progress.
