Ford 8.8 Swap.

Recommended Posts

So I am getting rid of my old banged up 8" and am looking to replace it with a 8.8. Couple questions I have is what years should I be looking for Ive heard that 79-93 Fox 8.8 are the exact size as the 69 which is 59.25 I have also of people using a 94-98 Explorer 8.8. Also I know that the spring perches will have to be modified to be used under a 69 but will the spring perches the TCP work with an 8.8 here is a link to them.http://www.totalcontrolproducts.com/leafspringplate.html

IIRC the spring perches are the parts that are welded to the rear end housing that center the rear end housing on the leaf springs, not the plates that go under the leaf springs that the shocks bolt to that you show in the link.

Thats right, my mistake. I do believe the the 79-93 Fox already have spring perches welded on not sure if they are in the proper locations though.

Just curious why an 8.8 instead of a 9"? Unless someone is giving you a deal on an 8.8 already setup for leafs, much easier and better to go with a 9".

Fox & later 8.8 are setup for link arms with coil spring mount pads.

I've heard the 8.8 are just as strong as a 9" is not stronger? Plus it is allot cheaper to get an 8.8 compared to a 9". I can get an 8.8 with disc brakes, 31 spline, limited slip posi trac, and 3.73 gears for just under $200 from pick and pull. As to where the cheapest 9" I could find with those same options is around $800-900.

If anyone else is curious about this swap I found this link with a bunch of useful information. Turns out that a 86-93 8.8 is .25" wider than the 69 9" and the center section is equal in the center of the housing unlike the Explorer 8.8 so there is no pinion angle. http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/116_ford_8_8_rear_end/viewall.html
