Mike65's 69 Coupe build

Mike I like the Summit 600 idea, and have been thinking of getting one for about a month. Speaking of hot, we've got triple digits predicted for the next ten days here.

Yesterday I installed the new l/s hood hinge. Next, I have to fight with the hinge spring.

Hook the spring on the base of the hinge ,loop a large box end wrench on the other end of the spring ,with the hinge all the way up pull on the wrench untill you can hook the spring . I have a medium size crescent wrench I use ,it works easily

Today I spent some time in the garage until the heat got to me. I installed the fuel sender in the tank, the fuel line from the pump to the carb & finished painting the trunk black.

It was 70° this morning after I got home from work, so I figured I would get in some Mustang time. I pulled the valve covers, distributor & spark plugs. I used a cordless drill long 1/4" drive extension & small socket to prime the engine with oil. Timed the engine, re-installed the spark plugs, valve covers & the distributor.

Today is a beautiful 62 ° Fall Day so I spent some time in the garage. I took the battery from my old Ranger P/U & put it in the Mustang so I could see if the engine turns over. Hooked it up & tried it the starter just spins. Jacked up the car & checked the starter & it seems when I installed the starter, I did not fully tighten the bolts. I tightened the bolts & retried it & the engine cranks over. Now I need to get some gas & try to see if it will start up.

I am back again with a starter issue. After I got the engine to crank, a couple days later I got some gas to see if it would start the starter would sound like it is just spinning & no crank. Just a little back history, the engine is a 5.0 from a 1987 C/V, the trans is a WC T-5 from a 1987 Mustang, the bell housing spacer plate is for a T-5 trans, & the starter I used is supposed to be for a 1987 Mustang. I have read a lot of posts about this & have read where people have used their starters from the auto in their T-5 conversions. Unfortunately, the original starter is long gone. IIRC it has the 157T flywheel. I am thinking of getting a starter for a 69 Mustang 302 auto & trying it. Any suggestions?

Hi Mike, sounds like your starter is not engaging the flywheel.  I would pull it out and make sure that there’s not something wrong with the Bendix drive.   You should be able to bench test it to see if the starter gear is properly engaging.

Also, just in case, you should take a look in the bell housing to make sure there’s no broken teeth on the flywheel or starter

On mine, I’m sure I used a 157 tooth ring gear flywheel

In my 1968 Mustang, I’ve a very similar set up, with a roller cam 302 engine and a T5.  I used a stock starter for a 1987-1993 V8 Mustang.

I’m not sure what a C/V means with respect to the engine.?

fyi, I did not use any kind of bell housing spacer as I used a bell housing from an original roller cam 302 manual transmission car that came with the engine.  Don’t think that has anything to do with your current problem.

Oh, OK, that makes sense
The only thing I can think of is the Crown Victoria had an AOD transmission and flex plate, so the starter from that set up might not work with your Mustang, which has a manual transmission and flywheel.

Using a stock starter from a 1987 Mustang GT with a five speed should work
