Mach 1 Project I started...

Recommended Posts

I've got both quarters welded in solid, the trunk floor tailight panel. Now its time for some grinding and flap wheel action and i will move on to the doors.

I really under estimated how quick i would go through on flap wheel, but it makes the metal finish so TnA its more than worth it.

Some of the pics are blurry- sorry.

I got the doors off this weekend. Here you can see a prime example of the butch paint job this car once had...purple? Really? Purple?!?!

This area was fiber glassed over. I'm going to buzz off the door skin for both doors and then get them blasted. This shouldn't be too bad to get patched up. Just a little time and sheet metal. We'll see how bad it loos once it gets back from the blaster though....

The passenger side QP is pretty well ground down now. There are some slight low spots that i am going to hit with the welder (small small tacs). The more metal and less filler, the better.

Finally, i removed the dash and windshield, getting the interior ready for the floor pans.

Put some more time in on the car this weekend... Removed the rest of the wiring, heater box, and steering column.

TQ boxes are a mother Fer to get out...I could have drilled out the spot welds and it would have come out quicker, but i want to be able to weld everything in from inside the car, so there are no spot welds that can be seen from underneath. So a little extra work now will save me alot of grinding and labor under the car later.

It looks like i will be fabbing up some patch panels for around the fresh air vent openings and small spots on the inner rockers. Nothing bad though.I plan to get both the drivers and passenger sides welded in about 25%, then weld it up with the suspension loaded.

Also, the floor panes will not be lap welded, i want a smooth look from under the car. I'm going to be adding sub frame connectors for added support and will be putting additional floor supports in with the subframe connectors.

ive gotta figure out why my phone is shrinking the pics, sorry again for the small resolution.

I got sometime to work on the car this weekend. I'm getting everything ready for the tq boxes to go in, then the floor pans.

I bought one piece torque boxes and seperatted them. I also fabbed up a new e-brake tunnel and popped out the passage holes for it.

The front floor support had a some rust damage too it, but overall was very solid. I cut out the rust metal and welded in a piece of 1/8" plate for added strength. The pictures below are just phase one of welding. I could not finish because i ran out of shielding gas. But i basically fill any low spots from here and grind them smooth. 90% will never be seen, but its small things like that i want to make sure are done right....piece of mind i guess.

This is where the side of the TQ box was welded in. I welded up all the holes, ground it smooth. When i weld in the new TQ boxes, it will be a combination of plug welds and stitch welds. She'll be in there tight.

And here is where i ended:

I am picking up the metal today for my subframe connectors and i will start to make those next....

I started by organizing the garage (I hate feeling like i am working in a hole), and then i got the passenger front torque box out.

It takes a long time to get those out without butching up everything it is attached to, but you gotta do it right. I found what i expected, the passenger side front floor support was rotted out like the drivers side. The good news - i'm about 75% of the way done with the rust repair lol

some crappy pictures to update with, i need to get a real camera for at home instead of my cell phone...

Got the square tubing for my sub frame connectors. (thats what that blur is lol)
