Handegard 10 Report post Posted October 4, 2010 (edited) So, you who have done this. Have you retained your stock shifter? I am looking at http://www.ford-aod.com/Classic_Mustang_AOD_Transmission_Conversion.htm and wondering if #89X is all I need. I'm guessing I replace the shaft in the AOD with that one, and I can bolt my factory linkage to this? Is it really that simple? Thanks guys, I am SO close to having this thing on the road (if not done yet) Edited October 4, 2010 by Handegard

Handegard 10 Report post Posted October 4, 2010 make sure your aod has the right shift pattern. I've only seen AODs with this shift pattern... What is the other option? Mine have always been P-R-N-D-2-1 I'm trying to decide if I want a B&M Quick Silver, MegaShifter, or the Factory setup. I think both the B&Ms look bad-ass in that "wow, check that guys car out" kind of way, but I don't know that I want to be that guy... I kind of want stock.... But if I can get the stock one working in a hurry... Also, the rod I'd be looking at is #89X from http://www.ford-aod.com/Classic_Mustang_AOD_Transmission_Conversion.htm
6T9Mach1 12 Report post Posted October 4, 2010 I had very good luck hooking my AODE up to the factory shifter and getting the gears to line up perfectly. All I used was some "all-thread" which can be picked up at a local hardware store and two swivel linkage arms that can also be picked up at a hardware store or somewhere like Jegs or Summit http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/15740/10002/-1?parentProductId=752543 Adjustments are made by screwing the swivel arms in or out slightly to get everything to line up properly with the shift selector. You may need some bushing spacers and washers to get everything hooked up with no slop but it can be done.
danno 128 Report post Posted October 4, 2010 I don't remember, but I think all I did was to turn the shift lever on teh AOD 180 degrees, and it connected right up to my existing stock shifter. I don't think you need the 89X part. That is for earlier Mustangs. So save the money and try hooking it up without it, I think it will work. As for the shift pattern, I think the AOD has a P R N D1 D2 1. D1 is with overdive 4th gear on, D2 is with it off. So what was formerly "2" on your shifter is now "D2". I also just flipped over my original and did a little bending to it to get it lined up just right. But what i did was open up the rod mount lengthwise a little more and then bolted that adjustable side to the shifter, and tacked the original bushing and attaching bolt with the pin through it to the Tranmission shift arm where it used to have the stud. I ground off the stud to weld the bolt to it.. It took a couple of tries with a hammer and a vise to get it bent just right but it works great and was free.
