RPM 1,190 Report post Posted October 13, 2017 That's some crazy stuff guys. Hopefully I'm one and done. Casey my plan was to return on the 10 to visit a buddy in Spring TX, then my brother in Round Rock then swing up thru Keller. However I didn't want to push my luck as the bearing kept getting loose even though they were adjusted and cotter pinned so I only visited my brother. RPM 1,190 Report post Posted October 14, 2017 Thanks Casey. You, like so many here, are a good man. Southern hospitality has given this California boy new faith in his fellow man.

Luckily the owner was really cool. I had slowed down enough that it did no damage to the car. Animals at 65 mph are no fun either. I had a Camaro that I hit a deer in. That was some freaky stuff. I think it was my third test drive on my stang, the steering column came loose and fell into my lap when I was turning a corner. My fault. I modified the column for the rack. used a different kind of D-Shaft and removed the bottom part of the column. The upper part has nylon blocks that the column slides up into with bolt going through the blocks not the metal. The column slid out of the nylon blocks. I ended up about 2 inches away from a 4 foot drop off on the side of the road.
Kilizyrag 0 Report post Posted October 14, 2017 Bob, What an amazing road trip we had. It still pains me that we were not there to help when your wheel bearing failed. I rigged up a push button remote starter switch to run my brake lights the rest of the way home. It looks like I have a nitrous switch on the shifter now. Bullet Bob lost no more shims after we all got together and did a garage alignment in Ft Walton Beach. We had a great traveling bunch. I hope we can do it again. RPM 1,190 Report post Posted October 15, 2017 Dang Gary, I didn't know you were on here! Yes, it was a fantastic road trip. I'm so glad to have met you and Carolyn. I sure hope she's feeling better. I was serious when I said you guys were easy and fun to travel with. No worries at all on not being there for the repairs. I was the one who decided to leave early, and I only would have wasted your time of you were there. I was able to put some well needed cash into the tow truck driver's pocket, and saved my back from mucho pain
RPM 1,190 Report post Posted February 6, 2018 I don't think I touched my Mustang for two months following my Florida trip. I'm pretty sure the thrashing before leaving, the bearing failure mid trip and the 2 day drive home from Austin burned me out a bit. I had a couple of spare hubs on hand so I got them installed with new races and bearings. I bolted on the Cobra brackets but couldn't get the caliper to fit as the rotor wasn't centered in the bracket. Removed the hub to confirm that the races were fully seated. Putting the hubs side by side revealed the offset issue. Hmm. Time to buy another hub. My engine ran rich on the trip, so in order to tune the carb I looked into an air/fuel ratio gauge. One of the guys I caravaned with Gary (RV6 here) has an A/F ratio gauge on his 67 coupe, and used it to tune his 289 driving down from his 8,000 ft elevation at home. Since I needed to refinish the headers, I figured I'd go ahead and weld in a couple of O2 bungs on the richest and leanest primary tubes and into the exhaust pipe. The AFR unit has one O2 sensor which will be in the exhaust pipe, But I read that guys use the readings from the richest and leanest primary tube along with the combined average from the exhaust pipe to keep the leanest and richest cylinder in line. The sensor will be mounted in the exhaust pipe past the header collection for regular use, and used in the primary tubes to confirm there isn't a too rich or lean cylinder. After a couple of test drives the air-fuel ratio is 14.8 at cruise speed. Good enough for government work. This is the unit I bought.
Ash 145 Report post Posted February 6, 2018 This will be interesting to see how much variation you get in your AFR's. You're probably going to learn more now about how your car is running than ever before.
RPM 1,190 Report post Posted February 6, 2018 Ya, it really uses a lot of the gauge when driving around town. Stays kinda steady when cruising at speed. Found this online:
bryonbush 85 Report post Posted February 6, 2018 I ran that afr gauge that I used for my tuning. It did a good job. Generally that bung will have to be back behind the collector by a few inches.
Ash 145 Report post Posted February 6, 2018 That's a nice and simple chart. I've saved that for future reference. Thanks
Vicfreg 771 Report post Posted February 6, 2018 Hey Bob. Had a similar issue with hubs on my 1970. I believe the hub on the right in your picture is the correct one. There are a lot of earlier Mustang hubs that may or may not fit the later models. I used the drum brake hubs and the Mustang Steve kit with 2004 Cobra Brakes. I actually wound up with a hub that was warped. Probably from some ancient accident running into a curb..... They are getting hard to find. I sourced mine I think from a Fairlane.... RPM 1,190 Report post Posted February 18, 2018 Installed a backup camera as the view out the back of these cars is less than stellar. I'm not sure where the final resting place will be for the screen, but I do know I'm not too keen on looking at the obnoxious screen when I'm not backing up. EZ PZ to install and the screen turns on when the trans is put into reverse. The camera lens is above the O of California on the license plate. 1 latoracing reacted to this
Ash 145 Report post Posted February 18, 2018 Any space in the glove box to place it?
Caseyrhe 650 Report post Posted February 19, 2018 I'd put the camera on a switch, you could see the Chevys behind ya a lot easier, lol
RPM 1,190 Report post Posted February 19, 2018 Initially thought of the glove box and that's where it was going till the reach to get there nixed that idea. And a switch to operate it was on the list for a while also.
Silver_69_Coupe 31 Report post Posted February 19, 2018 How about a display that is built into your rear view mirror. They are a little smaller but work out good. We are in the habit of looking there when we back up anyways. Some examples I want to do something similar but with 3 cameras. One on each side and one on the back. Just haven't figured out how to place the side view cameras yet. I was thinking in the part of the bumper where it curves back into the body.
Silver_69_Coupe 31 Report post Posted February 19, 2018 Here is a setup similar to the one I wan to use. Kinda expensive but a nice setup.

There are some nice rear view mirrors with screens available that I concidered, but I already had my one piece headliner installed and didn't want to mess with it. Vicfreg 771 Report post Posted February 19, 2018 I am using a DIN 1 head unit with a small flatscreen that takes a camera input. It fits in the original footprint of the radio, and doesn't hang in the way of other stuff. It is made by BOSS, but there are other DIN 1 models. If you go with a DIN 2 size, many of those have a retractable screen.
Vicfreg 771 Report post Posted February 19, 2018 After taking this picture, I sacrificed an old cigarette lighter knob, and cut it down to fit on top of the radio knob, so it matches the wiper and headlight switches.... 1 RPM reacted to this
RPM 1,190 Report post Posted March 8, 2018 The only update I can report on the 69 is that I installed a horn button today. So I've got that going for me, which is nice. Around 10 years I had a 1956 F100 project which was sitting collecting dust and black widows, so I gave it to a friend. I'd seen it over the years at his place with no work accomplished, but he did buy a fenderless bed. The other day I was on another Mustang forum and saw where a guy had just bought a nice 56 F100. So I said, I need to get another 56. I called the guy I had given my 56 to and asked if he still had it, and if so would he sell it to me. He said he did still have it, but asked how he could sell it to me if I'd given it to him. Yes! I will pay him for the bed and some "storage" fees. She is in need of some love, but has very little rust compared to most I've seen. Happy days again. Just a couple extra holes in the dash. It's got a 9 inch, but don't believe I'll be using all those springs!
Ash 145 Report post Posted March 8, 2018 OH yes yes yes!! Awesome! What are you plans with the build? And how many houses can you carry with those rear springs? haha
