69RavenConv 286 Report post Posted January 25, 2010 Wow, $300 apiece? They'd have to be really special compared to $20 halogens... (Mike, the link kinda works; you have to "pick your store", then "go shopping" and you'll eventually get there.)
Angel 24 Report post Posted January 26, 2010 I have seen these before but never on a car. Led bulbs can be very bright but the light usually wont shine very far. plus they're directional. In this case, the lens looks like it would do a good job in reflecting the light, but i'd be curious as to how far down the road? But theres a reason why LED's arent used on new luxury cars... EastYorkStang 63 Report post Posted January 26, 2010 What reason is that? The new R8 we were looking at has them?
Daves69Coupe 10 Report post Posted January 26, 2010 On the R8 only the outer part of the lights and there for show the main light is still a Projector style. Ive never seen full LED headlights.
Angel 24 Report post Posted January 26, 2010 On the R8 they act as day time running lights. more for show than anything else.
EastYorkStang 63 Report post Posted January 26, 2010 Here is a direct link from the manufacturer explaining them a bit more.
69RavenConv 286 Report post Posted January 27, 2010 You made me curious, so I did some googling. I linked some articles below. It looks like they might become pretty mainstream, Toyota Prius for example. I'd wait for the price to come down as they become more common, though. Talks about adoption of LED headlight tech: http://tinyurl.com/yk438yp Details on Audi's system: http://www.caranddriver.com/features/09q3/2010_audi_r8_led_headlights-tech_dept
kazlaszlo 10 Report post Posted January 27, 2010 Why do you want LEDs ? I added a relay to be activated by the headlight switch, therefore sending full 12V to the headlights. They are pretty bright. Kaz
StephenC 10 Report post Posted January 27, 2010 Here you go I would actually recommend HID and heres a kit with everything you need. http://www.mustangdepot.com/OnLineCatalog/Electrical/headlamps.htm
Angel 24 Report post Posted January 27, 2010 LED bulbs are much more efficient and run a lot cooler than halogen or HID bulbs. They dont use glass so they are pretty durable and wont brake easy. Plus, some can last up to 100,000 hours! Ive got led tail lights and i will never have to worry about getting pulled over for a shot brake light. EastYorkStang 63 Report post Posted January 27, 2010 Thanks for the links. Interesting reading. I've planned to do the relays in the spring. In fact I've already got the parts. When I first saw these I thought it would be trick enough to add some wow factor to my car?
69RavenConv 286 Report post Posted January 28, 2010 When I first saw these I thought it would be trick enough to add some wow factor to my car? Well, I bet the light is a really pure, brilliant white. The Audi article says a lot of the appeal is the ability to customize the shape and look. I bet they start getting really tricked out before too long. Maybe not a great look on a classic but watch for the ricer crowd to go for them after they see them on a Lexus or a BMW or an Audi. A plain vanilla one like the NAPA one you linked would be fine on a '69 but a little too pricey for me (I did the relay mod)
