SunnDogg 18 Report post Posted August 6, 2009 (edited) http://www.1969stang.com/mustang/forum/album.php?albumid=31 I am trying to identify what air cleaner base and snorkel is in the attached pictures. The only numbers I can find on the air cleaner is a 4 w/ a box around it and 70072. Anyone have any thoughts? I'm trying to piece together a 390 unit. See link for pictures... Thanks in advance for the help! Edited August 7, 2009 by SunnDogg
Grabber70Mach 107 Report post Posted August 6, 2009 Maybe this will help....................................... What Shaker do I have? The highly desirable shaker option was available on Mustangs for only 2 years, 1969 and 1970. Boss 302 Mustangs only had the shaker available for the 1970-year. Shakers were available for the following engines, 351W, 351C, 390HP, 428 Cobra Jet, and the Boss 302. Mustangs that came with the shaker option used the same hoods. The difference in dimension and location was "adjusted" by using different shaker bases for the different engines, locating the scoop in the same location in relation to the hood. Descriptions for the various shakers are as follows: 428: A 428 shaker assembly is 18.83" in diameter and 5.50" tall. It has 3 "L" brackets welded to the outside edge with a stud sticking up from each that the shaker intermediate plate attached to. Click here for a picture. 390CI: A 390 shaker assembly is 18.83" in diameter and 5.82" tall. The Ford part number is C9OZ-9600-J and the casting number is C9ZF-9600-J. Click here for a picture. 351C: a 351C shaker assembly is 18.83" in diameter and 6.25" tall. It has a lip that runs around the entire base and has 3 studs sticking up from the lid. The 351C has a provision for a breather filter to attach to the inside of the air cleaner base. A hose runs from this breather to the oil cap. It may have the number 4 70071 on it. 351W: A 351W shaker assembly is 18.83" in diameter and 6.14" tall. It has a lip that runs around the entire base and has 3 studs sticking up from the lid. The 351W has a metal or plastic elbow sticking out the front of the air cleaner base. A hose runs from this breather to the oil cap. Click here for a picture. Boss 302: A Boss 302 shaker assembly is 18.83" in diameter and 5.50" tall. It has a lip that sticks out the front edge about 1 1/4" and tapers down to no lip on the sides. The Boss 302 has a plastic elbow sticking out the front of the air cleaner base. A hose runs from this breather to the oil cap. Click here for a picture. Note: The measurements noted above are direct from Ford company information are are for the entire shaker unit, not the base. The shaker hood scoop is adjustable by three pan head screws that attach the scoop to the intermediate plate. This will allow adjustment of the scoop. Note that other shaker bases will work (although not as well) on the Boss 302. A 351W shaker assembly and an assembly from a Torino will work on the Boss 302. SunnDogg 18 Report post Posted August 7, 2009 Thanks Grabber. It's on its way so we'll have to measure it when it comes in. It looks like it may be a 351C base w/ a 390 snorkel.
Hellcat 10 Report post Posted August 9, 2009 SunnDogg, Answered your PM. Yep, you have a 351 Cleveland base for a Mustang. The 70072 number is the key. Drew
