EastYorkStang 63 Report post Posted February 19, 2009 I want to go big block in my coupe. Are there web sites showing how to install a 460 into a 'Stang? Has anyone done this before? Is it cheap? Going with manual brakes/steering with an auto trans. Getting the 460 out of a Lincoln.
bnickel 10,004 Report post Posted February 19, 2009 check with crites restorations for parts and i think they may even have a manual.
jmlay 80 Report post Posted February 20, 2009 The 460 will go in but it is longer than an FE & will be tight on the sides like an FE. Mike
coz 108 Report post Posted February 20, 2009 Here's a pic of a 460 Ford racing crate engine in a 70 FB. It was a tight fit but would go in without any body mods. However, the owner did notch the shock towers to have better access to the 2,3 and 6,7 plugs. http://www.1969stang.com/gallery/COZ-69Mach1/111_1158?full=
S code 69 13 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 A 460 is the same block as a 429, so it was done from the factory in a the Boss 429. Why not go with an FE ? plenty of options there and probably easier to get parts for. more correct too if that matters to you.
jmlay 80 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 But Ford moved the shock towers out so it would fit. With the huge heads. S code 69 13 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 I didn't think they were any wider overall than a FE ? if that's the case then I'd definetly go with an FE myself.
jmlay 80 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 A boss because of the heads. A reg 460 is just longer.: http://www.mustangsandmore.com/ubb/EngineDimensions.html Mike
bnickel 10,004 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 the 429/460 is wider than an FE but not a whole bunch, maybe an inch or so wider. it's actually a bunch easier to put a 429/460 in a 67-up car than it is to put a 351 cleveland in a 65-
Mufflerbearing 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2009 You can make more power cheaper if you use a 429-460. Parts are more available than 428. Just use one piece export brace and monte carlo bar to keep the towers from sagging from the weight.
coz 108 Report post Posted February 23, 2009 Buy this http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=2599 and have one bad ass engine. Light weight but strong. There's a 521cid kit for this with EFi making 625/600 around 5500.
468stang 11 Report post Posted March 1, 2009 Put this in last night, took about 20 min. and has just about as much room as the FE block.

bnickel 10,004 Report post Posted March 1, 2009 amazing how easy it is, huh? maybe this will quell some of those arguments about how they don't fit.
