My starter is kaput and needs replacing?

Recommended Posts

My starter has gone kaput. The solenoid has heated to the point the side terminals have melted loose.I have to replace it today and I am confused about what to order.

Originally a 302 automatic car that I swapped the starter onto the 351W T-5 5 speed I replaced it with.

Now when I inquired about a new one they are asking is it for a manual or automatic car? What are the differences?

Are you indicating your solenoid is on the inner fender has melted or the possible solenoid on the starter? Most stock SBF starters do not have a solenoid attached to the starter. If it is the inner fender type, you may just have a fried solenoid. (A little cheaper fix, only $14) Jump your starter with 12 v to see if it rotates.

On your question of the different types of starters for autos or manual. There are some differences between applications. The C4 302 starter will most likely bolt up to the T5 bell housing but the flex plate dia and tooth count (157)on the 302 is probably different than the T5 flywheel dia and tooth count (164) This could cause the bendix to jam when starting but would not cause the solenoid to heat up.

Just dropped a 351C in and was going to use the stock C4 302 starter but would not fit, hit the oil pan. Invested in a mini-hitorque (Only $20.00 more that stock) and works great. This mini has the solenoid on it, so just changed a couple wires on the solenoid with no extra draw.
