neverhit 10 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 I found a vacuum canister in the front passenger wheel well and in the engine bay there are two small lines that come from it. Just for fun I plugged one line and pumped a vacuum with a brake bleeder pump. It didn't hold a vacuum for long. Two quetions.. What is this can used for and how do you get it out? Thanks, David 69 with 302, with AC and Power Steering (Ram).
rjardy 10 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 Its a vacuum reservoir, and you need it! Our cars climate controls (I see you have AC) for factory AC run off of vacuum. The canister holds extra vacuum to operate all the controls. One line on the canister goes to the vacuum manifold that is on the intake manifold, and the other goes to the vacuum controls under the dash. If you ditch the AC, I guess you can ditch the cannister. Rob
jmlay 80 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 The tilt wheel cars had one as well. AC on a 70 is near the hood hinge & the Tilt canister is under the battery if I recall correctly. Mike
neverhit 10 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 Thank you. I do plan on keeping the AC. So the vacuum line turn on and off vavles needed for the AC to work properly. I guess I need to get a manual to check out the vacuum diagram.
neverhit 10 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 I forgot to ask. How do you remove it? Mine had a leak and probably needs replacing.
EastYorkStang 63 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 There should be bolts inside the engine bay holding it. I replaced mine with a large Heinz Tomato can with two small holes for the lines. Left the Heinz markings on it. Puzzled a lot of people!
6T9Mach1 12 Report post Posted April 4, 2008 The vacuum can in front of the tire, under the battery tray was for tilt steering.
