My Progress Pic Thread (69 Coupe)

Recommended Posts

Well, I've been working here and there on getting the car degreased so I can start breaking down the suspension and brakes this week.

Here's some pics. I have sooo much todo but luckly I have some serious motivation with this past warm up over the weekend.

Any advise on cleaning up in inside? I'm just going to get my grinder and a wire cup and go to town unless someone has a better idea besides media blasting. Luckly there are only a few rot spots so I'll be welding those closed over the weekend as well. Then I'm coating everything in POR15, up and down, all over. Except the body pannels of course.

Should be pretty fun!

And for now it sits high...Time to strip it more.

That is what I have been using, it takes a little time but it has cleaned up my interior, just make sure you wear safety glasses. I have also heard that the oven cleaner (not the cheap brand, but not the expensive) does wonders on removing paint and undercoating. But you have to wash it off with water after you apply it.

Lookin good..

wow those pics look famiular i seem to have that same display in my garage lol

yeah oven cleaner does really good on paint removal but not soo much on undercoat mr muscle oven cleaner used to be the best but i think they stopped making it

if you have small parts that you need to clean buy a gallon jug of castrol super clean and use it as a soak it takes about a day to get off heavy junk but it works really well just be sure to cover your soaking bucket cause it evaporates

the only things i have found to do a good job on undercoaying are the old propane torch and a putty knife unless its the spray can undercoat then laquar thinner does pretty good on it

How does the dry ice work? Cracks it?

The stuff on my car is thick! Real thick! Rock hard. I'll try a torch.

The dry ice freezes it to the point of cracking and then you just tap the frozen section and it shatters right off. But it doesn't really work very well on things on an angle like fender aprons because you can't keep the stuff in one place!

Also, i don't think it matters how thick the undercoating is.

Well, last night I went and bought the whole POR15 set up.

I'm going to degrease with Marine Clean, then etch it with Metal Ready then shlap on the Chassis Semi Gloss Black POR15. I figured I could degrease with a cheaper degreaser and that whole route then i decieded if i'm doing it. I'm only doing it once.

And if the undercoating falls off, I'll do it again. lol :D

I got it from my local auto paint shop, Premier Paint Technologies.

It was $240 for the gallon of POR15, Metal Ready & Marine Clean.

Well worth it to NEVER have to worry about rust again. The stuff is the most amazing paint.

You can do it however you wish but I'm using a brush. If it gets on ANYTHING that it shouldn't be on, you aren't removing it easily.

I would never spray it. F that. The stuff is wicked. It actually levels very nicely when brushed on.

In my opinion, I'd NEVER restore a car without POR15ing the underside and bay.

Good find. Free shipping always works!

Don't forget to pick up http://www.stoprust.net/POR-15-Marine-Clean-Gallon-p-37.html

http://www.stoprust.net/POR-15-METAL-READY-Quart-p-35.html

It's worth it. The degreaser is your call but I chose theirs becuase the price isn't that bad and it's better to do it right once!

I should have more pics up this weekend.

Last night I pulled the harness and lower dash out.

I also wired my aircompressor last night, which should get me moving MUCH quicker. It's a big 60 Gallon dual stage Husky. I love it.

Good luck with the transformation. Sounds like we are both at about the same stage with our vehicles (although mine is a '68). I also just bought a Husky aircompressor back in December (80 gallon, 2-stage).

My '68:

Nice! You're car looks great! Looks like your body is more along then mine but yeah, we're at about the same page. Good luck too man! Can't wait to see it come together. I like your wheel and tire choice. Couldn't look any better!

Man, that compressor is HUGE! It's like mine if it gained 50lbs.

Mines a 7hp/60gal/135 max and rated for 5,000 hours! I got ripped off! haha

The Weld Draglites and tires were actually bought for my '66 fastback, back in '95. Just before I sold the fastback in '96, I pulled the wheels and tires off it and put them on my '68 (I've owned the '68 since 1982 --high school car).

My '68 originally came with non-power drum brakes all the way around, with an 8-inch rear. I replaced the front drums in 1990 with Granada front discs. Up until last year, I had a '79 Versailles 9-inch disc brake rear under the '68.

I pulled the Versailles out and have an '80 model Mercury Monarch 9-inch (formerly drum brake) rear end to put in place of the Versailles. I made some adapters to mount some Cobra rear discs to the Monarch 9-inch rear end for my car;

I also designed some brackets to adapt the Cobra discs to the '75 model Granada spindles I have on my '68;

With the larger SN-95 brake components, the 15" Welds will have to go. I barrowed a 17" wheel off my '03 Mach 1 and stuck it on my '68 to see what it would look like with the SN-95 brakes;

Well, I'm working a screwed up shift tonight --12:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m. It's getting close to time for me to head to work, so I guess I better haul a$$ outta here!.....

I work the same crazy shift, what do you do if u dont mind me asking ultrastang?

Hey Ben,

We shake and blow stuff up for a living where I work. "Normally", my work shift is 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. However, we had a very important test to do on a Mk 72, Mod 1, Aegis rocket booster that had to be finished by today (Friday) for Aerojet. I went in at 12:00 a.m., and we finished vibration testing on the Mk 72 about 3:30 this morning, and got to go home early (get a long weekend now :-) ).

Anyway, I work for NTS (National Technical Systems) as a Tech II in the Dynamics department, out in "The Area" in East Camden. NTS is an independent testing firm with locations across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. The NTS facility in East Camden, Arkansas is primarily geared to do testing for the U.S. military. We have the longest 120mm (5") gun range in the U.S. --3,000 meters (approx. 2 miles long), where we test M1-A1 Abrahms tank rounds.

Here are a couple of links to footage that was shot at our facility, showing some of our capabilities here at the Arkansas facility. The first link was a feature aired on "Mail Call" on the History channel in 2004:

About halfway through this video, there's a blonde headed guy with brown Carhartt pants, blue NTS-logo shirt on, pulling on a large 3/4" ratchet. That's me setting up for a test we were about to do while this video was being shot:

Test we did last year for Hewlett/Packard:
