Technical / Code question....(Not only Mustang)

OK, here's the deal. My buddy has a 68 Cougar that looks (as you all know) a lot like my '69 Mustang Coupe. I've read up some on his XR-7 and they tell of a 290 HP 302 block that was available in 68/69. (I think you can see where this is headed.)

 

Since the XR-7 is a FORD product, not a Mercury-is there a code that went with this engine, or is it just a ghost of the BOSS Eliminators?

In the 1969 section, you'll see what it reads about the 290 hp 302....

The Boss 302 was made available in '69 & '70 on Cougar Eliminators. The engine code is "G". It was rated at 290 hp.

ford and mercury both offered a 4v 302 in 68, i don't remember the HP rating but pretty sure it was less than 290, however the 290hp Boss motor was only available in 69/70.

In '68 the 302-4V was a J-code. It was 230 hp, 250 hp on the Shelby GT 350.

That was a one year only option for 1968. It was the "J" code 302-4V rated at 230 hp. It was basically the old "A" code 289-4V which was rated at 225 hp.
