smh00n 92 Report post Posted December 18, 2024 Men I have a Borgeson conversion and not happy with it. I know it's a difficult thing, but how heavy is manual steering on a small block car? Only running 205 tires, alloy heads, etc, no a/c. I'm considering going back to a manual box, and then there's the other question; a power steer ratio box or manual steer ratio? Sheriff41 2 Report post Posted February 7 With 205s and a good alignment, manual steering is not very "heavy". 1 1 RPM and smh00n reacted to this
jmlay 92 Report post Posted February 7 I drove a 428cj coupe several years ago with manual steering and manual brakes. It was not a big deal at all. Just get it rolling as you turn the wheel. Now I am sure parallel parking would not be the most fun but how often does anyone do that these days. 1 smh00n reacted to this
RPM 1,269 Report post Posted February 7 Several years ago I drove my brothers 69 428 Super Cobra Jet with stock manual steering. It was a beast, and drove like a dump truck. Shortly after I came across a freshly rebuilt Chokostang manual steering box and gave it to him. A couple years later after he installed the rebuilt steering box I drove his car, and what a world of difference. It felt like it had power steering. I immediately sent one of my manual boxes to Dan for a rebuild. I've driven my car with manual steering for several years and won't give it up unless I have some sort of physical ailment that prevents me using the manual steering. The key in slow speed turns is to make sure you move the car before turning the steering wheel.
RogerC 151 Report post Posted February 7 I recently bought the 16:1 ratio manual box, got it from Summit. Also bought the rest of my steering linkages from Open Tracker including the Trans Am roller idler arm. My original box has been worn out forever, last drove in the 80s. The car should drive pretty well. If it turns out to be heavy, I'll add electric assist, considering this, https://americanpowertrain.com/shop/electric-power-steering/ez-electric-power-steering-for-1965-70-mustang-cougar/
Mike65 512 Report post Posted February 7 When I was rebuilding the steering in my 69 Coupe I went to manual steering, I also replaced the stock idler arm with a roller idler arm from Opentracker Racing making a big difference in the steering. I can now steer it with one hand. 1 Mach1 Driver reacted to this
