aslanefe 346 Report post Posted February 4 Speaking of calipers, I can't think of a use for the metal shield on the inside of the caliper; does anyone know what that shield is for?
Vicfreg 791 Report post Posted February 4 Orientation looks right to me. Bleed screw on top is always preferable. Not sure why that bracket is there, looks like a caliper guard of some type.
Maynard 0 Report post Posted February 4 Just guessing, a heat shield ???
Brian Conway 272 Report post Posted February 4 From the 69 Shop Manual. 'Stabilizer'
Vicfreg 791 Report post Posted February 4 Wow, that’s interesting. Maybe they found that these calipers were twisting or something, and they had to add a bracket to Stiffen them up. I’ll have to look in the 1970 shop manual to see if it’s in there also. I had a 1968 factory S code, big block car, it had brake calipers like that, I don’t recall the bracket being on there
Rsanter 158 Report post Posted February 4 That bracket is a centering spring
aslanefe 346 Report post Posted February 5 That is a flimsy piece, can't see how it stabilizes the heavy cast sliding caliper. Also can't see which heat it shields and what it guards against. May be it centers the caliper by pushing the caliper out a very small amount so the pads do not drag when not braking. But I had that piece missing on one of my cars for over 25 years and did not have the issue of pad dragging.
