1969 Coupe rear axle ID

Hi,

I'm new to this so be kind to me. I have a 1969 Mustang Coupe with a 302. I had it up on my lift and noticed the rear axle cover has only dimples, and no drain plug? 

What axle do I have, and how do you change the gear oil?

Likely an 8” with a 302, assuming it has a removable center section. The link below shows the differences between the 8” and 9”.

Regardless, the only way to drain is to pump the oil out through the fill plug or axle tube if your not wanting to pull the carrier.

I don't have a drain/fill plug, that's the problem. All there is on the rear cover is two dimples.

The fill plug is on the cast iron removable center section, not the stamped steel axle housing.

On the upper left (driver's) side of the center section ... IIRC.    

YES, factory 302 2BBL cars came with the 8" differential.

Your only option is to pull the carrier.

 

A couple of options to refill:

1) fill through the vent

2)  pull an axle and fill through the tube

Unless you are having issues with the rear end making noise, you might want to consider just driving it.

I had this idea years ago with my '68, and once I pulled the axles and carrier, found issues with the teeth on the gearset and axle seals, etc, etc.  So, easy to head into a rebuild/refurbish once you open things up.
