  1. are you running long tubes? do your collectors come closer to the transmission or the front floor extensions?

i think you are more brave than me!

nope they're shorties but i've seen guys install long tubes bolted up as well. to be honest i think it would have been easier if i'd had long tubes

  2. makes sense to me. i like it!

i won't install the engine with the headers installed (or the fan). the 351w is a little too wide, not much margin for denting and scratching. plus i can get both headers bolted on in about 10 minutes (i can't count the number of times i had to pull them on and off during fitment).

yep i installed my 351w with the headers and fan and everything damn thing else bolted up, ac compressor, PS pump and alternator too. didn't scratch a thing.....used moving blankets draped over the shock towers

  3. i installed mine as a complete unit with all the accessories installed even, PS pump, AC compressor, alternator, trans, even my hedman shorty headers were bolted up as was the clutch fan. the only thing i removed from the engine was the carb and air cleaner. I did drop the steering linkage down by unbolting the idler arm though because I actually needed a little more room for the headers, still 100 times easier that trying to install the headers with the engine already in the car though.

  4. the goal is to try and look stock.

the entire motor will be sprayed with the same blue as the shaker. the Victor Jr. intake will remain aluminum but the intake fasteners will also be sprayed blue. i'm not sure about the water neck. i think that will get sprayed blue. i want to use the old black cobra valve covers but i've got some clearance issues with the stud girdles.

i won't paint the damper. the MSD pro billet distributor will get scuffed and the billet sprayed with the Duplicolor cast coat aluminum paint. the MSD coil was detailed to look similar to the old yellow top coils. all of the brackets/pulleys have already been detailed in some version of black, phosphate or natural steel. the headers were ceramic coated in a cast iron type of finish.

have you thought about using some valve cover spacers? several places sell them.

  5. so far the only intake i've found was just for a 351c. the heads can be machined for clevor builds but i've only come across the trickflow R series intake for thestandard cleveland....but it does look mighty impressive. if they do come out with a clevor version i just might have to build that "bogus Boss 302" cougar eliminator i've always thought about but with 331ci, hydraulic roller cam and port EFI instead of the current "fuaxtotype XR7-GT" build i've got going right now

  6. i was wanting to do the maier trunk lid on my car too. i was going to use a 70 mach 1 style stripe across the back of the spoiler that kind of mimics the shelby indention sort of. i was also thinking of doing the Boss 302 style blackout on top of the trunk lid too.....in the end i never did that trunk lid because i wasn't able to save up enough money before the car went to paint...i do have the shelby side scoops though.

check out the stripe on this 70 mach 1, that's what i'm talking about.

  8. hey guys just got back from the lake and the ping pong paddle canoe races and the jello up the nose through a straw competition and well, i got first in both....LOL

I'm doing all right and i do occassionally check in to see if anyone needs me for any tech stuff or whatever but pretty much everything Pak just said about my all but total abandonment of you guys is true, most of it anyway. i wish i had more time and felt much better so i could post a little more, luckily the daughter is starting back to school in a couple of weeks and my wife is taking the fall semester off from school so hopefully i'll have a little more time to play coming up soon.

Tom, the GT is looking good . and sorry about that whole console debacle too i sure wish it would have arrived in good shape so it could be in the car now. from now on anything fragile i sell is going to the UPS store so they can pack it and if it breaks it's on them.

My dad was up from houston a few weeks ago and took some new pics of the car. i need to upload them to my gallery but haven't even had time to that either. in the meantime here's one of my favorites

  9. you guys should get one of the plastic welder kits from like harbor freight or something for fixing the crack and stuff and maybe evern for adding those cupholders. also might think about one of those vinyl repair kits to add some texture since they have those little texture applicator things.

on a different not i found a really old magazine ad in super ford or something from back in the 80's for a 69/70 'glass console that had a slightly taller storage compartment area so the armrest actually worked as an armrest and low and behold it had cupholders too. i'd post it up but my scanner doesn't work, basically it was just like a stock console except for the taller box and the cupholders.

you could also try to find the cupholder from a 90's buick park avenue/olds 98, etc that pops out of the armest and adapt that to a stock console. i've also seen guys add cupholders from conversion vans, boats, etc. to their stock console. my old jeep cherokee had a pretty cool little cupholder accessory that i got from quadratec that screwed into the front of console box (factory screw holes) that maybe could be adapted. i had wanted to see if i could add it to the back of console in the stang but i forgot to remove it before i sold the jeep

  10. that was a great flick. my wife watched it with me and she still doesn't get it. she sort of understands and mostly lets me do my thing, so long as i on't bankrupt us, but she doesn't really get it. what kills me is that when got married she had a 95 Formula with the LT-1 and she loved that car almost as much as i love mine but to her a car is still just a car.

  11. ya know, i think it's a cool car and i sure hope the owner isn't a member of our little forum. this is the kind of thing that keeps from joining a car club, people nit-picking and trash talking other people's cars. personally i wish people could learn to not be so critical of other peoples pride and joy. not trying to start an argument here guys, just voicing my opinion. :surrender:

  12. yeah cowl hoods and the like are better than hood scoops but a hood scoop is still better than nothing.....any amount of cool air is better than hot underhood air ya know?

also, the boss 9's were really limited in carb size too so anything you could do to get more air into those giant intake ports would help. ever tried breathing through a straw? that's pretty much what that big 429 was doing with that "tiny" 735 holley, short air filter and restrictive hood scoop flapper. just removing the flapper from the scoop and installing a taller air filter element was a few tenths. in fact, ford even made note of that in one of the "shop tips" newsletters along with several hop-up tricks for boss 429's, including what jets to use when re-jetting the carb, where to get headers (almost nobody headers for it at that time), suspension tweaks, timing, etc. one of these days i'm going to buy that issue of the newsletter just to have it.

  13. ok there's a lot of incorrect info floating around here on the 69 GT's. first off the stripes are in the correct location on your Dad's car and his car had the standard chrome drivers remote mirror and no passenger side mirror, my car came that way too. also in Pak's retouched pic i can just make out the quad tip on the drivers side. only 4v cars got dual exhaust with the quad tips and even though all non-shaker GT's had non-functional scoops "most" GT's, not all but most, at least most of the 4v cars anyway, had a cutout in the hood under the scoop that was blocked off at the factory so it is fairly easy to convert them to functional ram air.

my car was originally lime gold with a black top, blackout hood, black GT stripe, black vinyl top and ivy gold standard interior with console. it is an M-code automatic car with factory AC, PS and disc brakes. it also came equipped with tinted wibndows, clock and parking brake warning light as well the visibility group option (i think all 69 GT's got the vis. group actually and the chrome remote drivers mirror was part of that option).

my car is still for sale but i'm not going to lower the price any more from the last post, i don't need to sell him so if i don't get what i'm asking i'll just keep him until the economy comes back around, he's been my friend for a very long time being my first car and all, got him in '84.

if you (or anyone) need info on my car or any kind of general info on the 69 GT's just let me know.

  14. Gang, I think I'd like to put this to bed now. I'm actually very glad I solicited feedback as it opened my eyes on a few things -- especially my leaving the box in my house for 3 weeks while on vacation.

I also think this little situation might help others in the future.

Finally, I don't think there was a bit of "mud" or a single "vulgarity" slung here (perhaps I misunderstood B-Man's point) which was my intention from the start. I don't hold anything against BNickel. He's an honorable dude. I'd like to think I'm the same.

Thanks for all your thoughts. BNickel, I'm sure it's obvious by now, but let's settle this up 50-50 as you suggested originally. If by some miracle UPS comes through, please let me know.

    Thanks again.

    Tom

hey Tom, thanks for helping me out on this, i'm gonna stay on UPS though and see if i can't all of your money back for you!!!!! i appreciate you meeting me half way for sure and i'll also keep looking for a decent base between now and then as well. Thanks!!!!!

  15. i'm the other member and i share Tom's disdain over the experience but i packaged the console as i thought appropriate even double boxing it as Tom has already explained and i thought that was adequate. i didn't include any other packing inside the box but only end of the console was able to shift at all and only a couple of inches up and down. according to what UPS is now telling me it "should" have had 6 inches of freespace on all sides and been packed with foam or bubble wrap which would have made the box about 4 times the size it was and would have easily doubled (or more) the shipping cost.

Also when Tom recieved the console he went out of the country for over a month and did not inspect the package until he returned, which honestly, i think should have been done before he left because the time it took to file the claim is most likely working against us at this point, however this all in hindsight and at the time i thought everything was fine since he didn't immediatley email me and tell me there was something wrong, so i assumed it had arrived fine and didn't think any more about it until over a month later. again, this is all in hindsight at this point now.

When UPS denied the claim, or rather the company that now handles UPS' claims, i appealed the decision and it was denied again, i have yet to hear anything back from them on the last appeal. If UPS turns around and pays the claim i will obviously refund Tom the entire amount but if UPS continues to deny the claim I asked Tom if he would split the amount with me since UPS destroyed the console and I packaged it in a manner that "should" have been adequate had they no so blatantly and obviously mistreated it. just so everyone is aware the console was not just broken it was shattered completely and utterly, someone at UPS obviously stepped on it or loaded it the bottom of bunch of boxes that weighed a couple hundred pounds or more.

I don't think it is fair for Tom to be out $300 but i also don't think it is fair that I be out the console either since it was obviously neither of our faults but rather UPS' fault who won't own up to their end of the deal, that is why I suggested and Tom paid for the insurance after all. i'm not one of those kind of guys who would say "you bought insurance on the package and if they won't pay up then too bad" i just can't be a dick like that but i also don't think it's fair that either one of us get's totally shafted either.

So now everyone has both sides of this, you guys decide what should happen next, should UPS continue to deny the claim. I would like to add though, that whatever decision is reached i can't pay Tom back anything until sometime in January since I'm disabled and only get paid about $975 month so money is tight for us, especially with Christmas in only a month and we have an 11 year old daughter.

it now looks even worse, though i'm not sure how it got that way. i don't know if Tom (highly doubtful) broke it some more to help with the claim or if UPS did it (this seems most likely to me)when they shipped it to the company that handles the insurance claims but there is are 2 pieces that are intact at all now the console box and the top panel piece almost everything else is in really small pieces now. so there really is nothing left that is repairable so it is totally unusable

  16. Mr. Nickel,

Yes, you’re right – in hindsight the search function should’ve been considered. Didn’t even see it. I’m a ‘live and learn’ newb here. Nonetheless, MANY THANKS for chiming in with this information!! Happy to verify that my gut feel was right. As mentioned, my first thought was they were an owner mod. This was reinforced by the well known history about these Ford non-functional cosmetic scoops. Of course, that’s not to say that they can be considered functional because of this cut out, but seeing the same distinct pattern cropping up here and there seemed to be too much of a coincidence to be only an owner mod. I have a new appreciation for the hood my car came with. Many thanks again!

    Best regards,

    Tony

glad to help, and the search function comment was mostly in jest really, although there is a ton of good info available on this site that can be found with the search function. unlike a lot of sites the search function here actually brings up a lot of stuff on the subject you are searching, like any search engine though, different phrasings may be bring up different pieces of info.

jayru, i know the subject of thread didn't really "require" using the search function to find the info requested but try a search on ram air and you'll get even more information than has been talked about in this thread, just FYI......

  17. and the Heated Ginger Houndstooth Cloth & Vinyl Buckets

well personally i'm going for the heated blue/black houndstooth cloth and vinyl (maybe even leather) seats in my 69 cougar. yes i know that only Ginger and black/white houndstooth was available in the cougar and only in 1970 at that, at least officially anyway, but i do believe you could have special ordered one with the medium blue and black houndstooth in 69 if you so wished Mercury even has the blue/black houndstooth listed in the 69 dealer album interior trim section

  18. the ford racing hod pin kit is actually pretty correct, the only thing really wrong are the lanyards and the pins themselves should be polished stainless steel instead of machined or brushed as they come out of the package otherwise they are pretty nice. they do have the correct underhood plates as well, not sure about other kits having them or not.
