  1. This is an old post now, but I wanted to give another update. I had my original steering box rebuilt and installed. So now the car is set up as a manual steering car (temporarily). Although the steering effort is very high, it drives perfectly normal with good return to center, with all the same steering components as were with the Borgeson box. The ONLY change was the steering box. Pretty conclusive to me. Big thumbs down to Borgeson for a bad product and worse customer service, hopefully my experience discourages customers and costs them money (like it did me).
  2. Just to wrap up my experience, I'm removing all this Borgeson stuff and going back to stock. I've contacted Borgeson and the vendor and they have refused a refund. So, buyer beware, you might get a defective product that the company won't stand behind. This "weekend project" upgrade cost me well over $1000 down the drain and about 9 months off the road. I threw away some of my stock stuff, so I'm burning more money to get back to stock, but it's worth it to me. This is not driveable.
  3. I have mine set at 4.5 degrees positive caster, still have this problem. I can't get any more caster without interference with the fender. Not sure what to do at this point, suffice to say I'm regretting this big waste of money. I'm tired of dealing with it right now, eventually I'll pull it out and try exchanging it again.
  4. Well now I've spent a few hundred dollars on alignments and related suspension/steering tweaking. It is a little better than before but it certainly doesn't feel like "modern steering". Now have 4.5 degrees caster, can't go any further or I'll have clearance issues. I think I'm going to drive it a while to see if it loosens up, otherwise I'll send it back.
  5. I'm going to take it back to the shop tomorrow to have them check for any binding issues. I installed all new steering linkages: center link, tie rods, idler, pitman, lower control arms, strut rods. The only other things I can think of would be some kind of binding in these new parts. The other thing I considered was that I did not cut my steering column. I was able to collapse the column enough for clearance, but maybe it is rubbing somehow? I know others had an issue with this, but I was able to turn the wheel freely so I thought it was OK. I don't see how the stock pump could cause this issue. The rep at Borgeson did not suggest it as a culprit. If nothing is found, the box is going back to Borgeson to try again.
  6. Well, now I'm concerned. Alignment complete with 4 degrees of caster and no change. I suppose this warrants another call to Borgeson for their input, I wonder if my unit could be faulty? If I have to pull this out and send back to them again, I am going to be grumpy.
  7. Big Secz - I don't know about your question about the pump, but I still think this is just an alignment issue, specifically the need for significantly more caster. I'm going to get mine realigned to these specs by the end of the week and I can report back. http://www.totalcontrolproducts.com/faq.html#alignmentSpecs
  8. has anyone installed the Borgeson box and achieved good return to center? Can you post your caster spec? I used a new OEM style idler arm and it doesn't return to center. I think that this is an alignment issue. Given that the OEM idler arm doesn't seem to be returning to center anyways, I'm thinking about swapping in a roller idler arm and then having it aligned with 4 degrees caster. FYI the steering is very manageable with the stock PS pump. Slightly more effort than stock PS, but not uncomfortable. I think the addition of the roller idler arm may offset the difference. (talking about stopped/slow speed performance). My other bit of advice is to only buy the box, AN fittings and rag joint. Both hoses are useless (I had to get mine custom made) and I had trouble with the steering adapter too (not sure what the deal was there, went with manual linkage).
  9. LOL, yeah, I was just thinking that I wish I had this info before paying for an alignment.
  10. Caster, not camber. I understand that caster does not affect tire wear.
  11. I talked to them today, they suggest getting the alignment done with 4-5 degrees positive caster.
  12. Big Secz - Thanks for the write up. I just finished the same swap in my '68 Cougar. You're absolutely right, this isn't an afternoon swap! I had several install issues, but only one left at this point... I just got mine back from the alignment shop and I'm having the same issue with poor return to center. For my install I converted to manual steering center link, idler arm, pitman arm, and new tie rod ends. Everything seems great except for not returning to center. Anyone have any ideas? I'm going to call the shop in the morning to get the alignment specs.
