  1. Little bit of progress on my steering wheel. I did not like the separation crack I had in the outer groove. The chrome tape wouldn't cover it. The tape shows imperfections of its underlying surface pretty bad. I tried hvac metallic tape and some chrome pin striping tape. Both showed the imperfect channel. So I decided to completely fill it in with JB. Then dropped it off with a brother who has wood working tools. He recut the groove with an 1/8 router bit. It ended up tad deeper than stock. My next plan when I have a decent day is to re prime it. The tape will go in and I plan to fill in over the tape with jb clear. Anybod have thoughts what order I should proceed with?

    1) prime-chrome tape - jb clear - mask n paint n detail woodgrain

    2) prime - paint n detail woodgrain - chrome tape - jb clear

    3) other?

One more question. Was the original outer trim ring bright chrome or a brushed look? I mostly see bright chrome on the net but most pics are restored wheels. I seen a couple brushed looking pics also, which is easy to replicate on either tape I have. Thanks for any input.

  2. Here's a few pics of the wheel I'm working on. So with a primered surface to start with, I'm assuming the woodgraining would need to be done in paint. My wheel came from my car without any color or woodgraining left. It was some aweful color of green plastic which it was molded from. I think I'll be able to get the woodgraining done with a couple colors of brown paint, then make the grain into the brown and fill in the voids with black paint. I'm still curious what color and shade would be correct for the backside. Is it gloss black or satin black or charcoal poly? My car isn't concourse, just want a correct look. Wished I could do this a little at time but it seems it needs to be done all at the same day or so and cleared within the time frame with paint.

  3. I appreciate your details Caseyrhe. Not much on the net to detail wheel restorations, except send it here or there, ranging from $500- 900. Buying new is about the same expense. My core was shrunk, pulling the front side crooked and cracked a bunch on the back. I doubt  mine could have every been properly restored anyway. So far it looks good in the black primer though. Anyway here's a couple questions I can't seem to resolve in the head.

    1) I have mine in black epoxy primer. Will the stain you mentioned color my wheel to look like yours? Does it matter what surface you begin with?  I guess Im not the sharpest tack in the box but also wondering if the stain is like oil based woodstain and you clear painted on top? Seems like paint wouldn't have a chance of sticking. Or did you use a clear stain?

Another thing I'll mention is my wheel was shrunk and pulled bad enough that both grooves are off. So far I used a router and jig to straighten the outer band. Its not any wider but deeper than the original cut. My options that I have in mind are 1) to install the pinstripe, then use a clear epoxy resin to fill it level or 2) fill in the groove completely with JB weld or similar and recut with a router. Problem with 1) clear expoxy will self level, causing it to run in the groove. Problem with 2) my wheel isn't exactly round so I'd be lucky to get an even cut around the diameter. I think I'm going to do #1 to start, if its a fail, I'll can #2 or worse just send in another core I have for a proper restoration.

You're wheel looks pretty good Caseyrhe. I'm just hoping for a usable wheel thats presentable until something better happens along, unless it turns out nice. I'll try to post some pics later to show progress or failures. Im away a lot so I'm slow at times. Thanks again for any procedures and tips.

  4. Just got my trashed out 69 rimblow in primer. For a 69 black deluxe interior, what is the correct color and gloss for the steering wheel? Any other advice on chrome outer strip is welcome too. So far my best plan is too use a chrome 1/8 pin striping tape and use a clear epoxy to fill in on top of the tape. Doing the paint, woodgraining and epoxy in a days time might be a stretch for me, trying to figure out what order to do it in. If anybody's has done this and has any tips or procedures I'd appreciate any details. My lower dash and column are newly painted charcoal metallic poly already. I think it still gets a black wheel, or that's what it looked like to me before I started on it. Thanks for any insight....

  5. RPM,

Here's where I'm at with this. My car and cluster has the original 140mph/8K tach with teak. All my gauges seem to work when grounding the sending units. So the gauges n circuit im not concerned about. In the pics, looks like the chrome is missing around the gauges of yours. I'm weighing my options, restoring an original or buying the repo. I am definitely interested in yours but I assume it'll be out of my price range to just use the bezel housing to send off to get rechromed. I appreciate your post n pics. Thanks rpm

  6. We do have the same bike. I dig your pipes. That's something I want to do someday to mine when funds allow. With bikes, you don't get as much for your money in my opinion. Yep it is a badlander. See, I can upholster a whole mustang for what 1 cycle seat costs. Pipes are the same, expensive for what you get. Anyway you did great picking out your ride and it impresses me to hear you've put bout 12km a year on yours. I use mine as a DD to work and such much only managed about 6k last year. Appreciate the clutch info. Speaking of, I just did my 5K service but haven't lubed the cables yet. If you've done yours, was the throttle side difficult? Ive also read people don't even do them because of Teflon lining not needing it. Btw the wife and daughter says the seat hurts their back and bottom, but it does me fine. I doubt they even ride enough to have ever got conditioned to it. Can you see past your shoulders any better with the flipped mirrors or is it a cosmetic mod?

  7. Between being inactive for awhile and posting from a phone that was responding slow I managed to quote myself. Thanks RPM for the photo. I just installed mine like yours and the it just looks like something is missing. The spring rides against the clip that retains the cable to mounting bracket. do you think this is correct or am I missing a piece?
