  1. That's a good point about what's recommended in the owner's manuals, you can definitely run 10W mineral oil, so I want to correct my prior post, which should have stated that if you opt for synthetic oil, then 10W is not enough, according to Hot Rod.

  3. From what I've read, increasing wheel size means decreasing performance, however it increases steering responsiveness which feels like increasing performance. To take an extreme example, when you take a tight corner with virtually no sidewall, the car is more likely to break traction and slide. When you take a tight corner with sidewall, the sidewall on the outside of the turn gives (decreasing steering responsiveness a little...but that's just the "feel" of it). When it gives, it places more rubber on the road and gives you better cornering. I'm sure that's why NASCAR doesn't use Conestoga wagon wheels. The same is true during a launch, which is part of the reason why drag racers have "wrinkle walls". No large wheels there. Increasing wheel diameter is also usually associated with increasing weight, which decreases performance. Most of that I got out a book called Chassis Engineering, and mostly near a section on the subject of the Circle of Traction. I think the only reason to get larger wheels is because you personally like the look better, or because your brake rotors and calipers require it. I'd keep the wheel diameter as small as possible, given good brakes.
  4. I was reading in Hot Rod a while back that 10-anything is not enough for our cars, so I use 20W50. Synthetic's better than mineral no questions asked, but you also want to make sure you get the proper zinc levels. You could use an additive, but why do that when it can be incorporated correctly without mixing? I use Royal Purple synthetic 20W50 racing oil. It's synthetic, has sufficient zinc without needing additives, and is a great weight for classic muscle. Because of the 50, you'll keep your oil pressure up as well. That's my 2 cents. Cheers.
  5. What are you guys doing for PCV valves in '69 302's? I took it for granted these would be easy to get, but it doesn't seem like it. First, I went to AutoZone, which could find the PCV valve, but not the plastic elbow that goes with it. Next, I went to Summit Racing and drilled down on a '69 Mustang 302...nothing. Lastly, I found one at Mustangs Unlimited, bought it and an elbow, but it's the wrong size elbow...wrong size for the PCV and wrong size for the hose. I have a 3/8" hose from the elbow to the carb. Where do you shop for your PCV valves? Thanks.
  6. It may be possible to temporarily connect a spare wire to a live connection and then to the positive on the blower fan to see if the blower fan works. I don't remember any details though, but my friend and I 100% re-wired my '69 in January '09 and we had a question why the blower motor wasn't coming on...was it the motor or the switch? We did exactly that and the blower motor worked, so I need to replace the switch, which I'll get to after I do a few more important things on the car. I only said it "may" be possible, because we did it when the dash and everything was apart. I hope there's enough room under there for you to do that when it's all together, but I think it's possible. Hope this helps.
  7. Ditto. It sounds like you need a fuel regulator, and if you don't have one yet, a fuel pressure gauge. I would mount the gauge in the cabin, because you'll get more information that way. For example, during a wide-open throttle (WOT) run, watch your fuel pressure to see if it drops. If it does, you'll need to re-tune to avoid a lean condition that could damage your engine. That's what I'd do, anyway. Cheers.
  8. Hi all, I'm new here. I'm pretty sure I know how to change carburetor jets in a home garage (put in a new spark plug, adjust jets 2 sizes at a time, test drive and avoid idle, then read the plugs), but I was also curious what other people with mild 302's and 600cfm DP's have for jets? My basic engine info is in my signature, I'm at sea level, and it's goal is just a daily driver with some performance. I'm waiting on an aluminum radiator right now, so I can't change jets and read plugs at the moment. I just put a Proform 600cfm DP on it. The factory jets are 66 primary and 72 secondary. So far, I like the Proform better than Holley and Edelbrock. In the near future I'll get an air-fuel gauge to help dial it in to around 13.0:1 AFR. But before that, who can guess what jets it'll end up with? The only prize for guessing is bragging rights. Even if you're not up to guessing, what jets are in your carb, and what's your basic motor setup? Cheers.
